View Full Version : Temps VERY high, but no thermal shutdown?

Had my server open today to change a noisy PSU, to a fanned but silent one and when marvelling over the noise of the machine, I decided to see what temps the CPU was running.

Celeron D 2.8
Silverstone NT01 Fanless
Thermaltake TR2 420
5400RPM Maxtor 40GB
1*80mm Stock Case Fan
Speedfan 4.29

With the fan disconnected, I thought that the 12cm PSU fan would be enough air to keep the CPU at OK levels...I was wrong...I've just shut it down after watching the temperature creep from 52C at boot to over 100C on idle! Strange thing is, it didn't go into thermal shutdown. I plugged the case fan in and saw the CPU temps steady down to 44-46C idle.

I'm confused now. It was beautifully silent without the case fan, but at over 100C just idling; but with the fan, it was not silent, but was at 44C idling - Yet when at 100C, it didn't thermal shutdown? What gives? The case can take upto a 92mm fan, so should I just buy a quieter Case fan to park behind the CPU cooler? OR even a 120mm fan cable tied behind the cooler?

Cheers guys,

Karl :)

just to confirm, did you disconnect the cpu fan lol?

Cheers

Nah - It's a fanless cooler :)

I have just booted from repositioning the cooler to have the psu fan suck air through it and get the same temps as the 80 case fan when in the 1st setup mentioned.

Even though the temps are solved with the cooler as fanless (As well as my ears thinking the psu is too - Dead silent = kick bum! :D ) I'm still intrigued as to why thermal shutdown didnt kick in - I left it on for 20 mins before shutting down out of fear as it crept upto 112C! Did Speedfan read wrong? Or have I got a asbestos-fingered CPU?

What i would do if i were you, is to get 2 case fans, one at the back and one at the front.
Then you wont need a thermal shutdown :D

No need mate - I sorted it just before Beere replied. I put the cooler so its finplate is facing the psu fan - This means it cools as well as the 80mm case fan, with no noise at all! Just a bit of a high pitched whine from the HDD now...

I'm just still intrigued why it didnt thermal shutdown at a temp lower than 112C which was when I shut it down myself. Otherwise, if it was still runing now, it would probably melt through the floor! :P

LOL

My mate just bought me a USB Hub/Cup warmer, so that heats my various beverages, pot noodles and cupasoups
