HELP!!! as as i can see there is no reason i am getting such high temps in my computer. The parts were delivered today and so i had a crack at it and i turned it on and all was fine turned off and changed the settings so it would boot from the cd drive so i could install windows and suddenly my computer dies on me!!! i restart it and the same happens even sooner!! i go into the bios and it shows me my cpu fan is running at 1600 rpms and the case fan at 2600rpms all seemed fine until i saw the temperature of my cpu at idle in bios 68 degrees!!!! it climbed until it reached 76 when the computer shut itself down! help i can't see the reason for this i'm not running a particularly powerful system theres still about half of the thermal paste left on the heatsink (an incident with a ****** i.e me who forgot to take the plastic cover off the cpu holder) help me please

MMM what i would do is, take the heatsink/fan off, wipe all the thermal paste off both cpu and fan, re-apply the paste, and re-sit the fan.
Make sure the cpu fan is firmly clipped down and cannot move.
You said you CPU fan was at 1600rpm, that seems pretty slow considering your cpu temp. was reaching its max! I know ASUS have QFAN which turns up/down the fan speeds accordingly. Is there anything like that you can enable/disable in your bios?

no i looked on fan speeds and all i could enable was smart fan
also about the paste could someone point me in the direction of some as i suspect that could be the problem as i cannot see anything else wrong with it

some person used tooth paste :D
here is some thermal compound
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... CM-TGREASE (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?CM-TGREASE)
make sure all the thermal grease/compound etc is wiped off the cpu and hs/f before applying a fresh layer

Scraped some thermal past back onto the cpu and today i got temps for my cpu of around 48 degrees and about 30 degrees on the mobo. Yay then i ran into a new problem it wouldnt recognise my hdd and cdd... answer make sure you actually push in all the ide ribbon cables... you can tell this is my first build.. but now im installing windows as i type so hopefully i should be home free... hopefully

Invest in a tube of silver thermal paste - apply evenly - and you should see lower temperatures and acheive a more stable system.
General warning: always take a build slowly, particularly your first one. Check and recheck the simple things or you'll end up with expensive paperweights...

Update: my new computer is up and running it runs like a dream it multi tasks soo well for example i had 11 programs running at once with no lag and no locking up i havent played any games yet but im downloading some games now i have some silver grease/paste coming tomorrow so i should be able to apply that soon then i will probably buy either an after market cpu fan or a case fan.

I just decided to have a look at my cpu temp and it was 55 - 60 at idle!!!! Ive just opened my case and OMG. It was embedded in dust! i got the hoover, cleaned it out, and my dad had some compressed ait in his van so i cleaned it all out and now its at 30 :)
Those heatsinks sure do get a lot of dust in them!
