Hey everyone,

Sorry to have another "which laptop shall I go for thread" but i'd like some advice/ help on choosing, its starting to do my head in.
To begin with I was all for a 13inch MacBook, but now i've looked around, I've seen better value for money on other brands that are actually better then the MacBooks. Though this has got me wanting more and more features :P

I got these questions from another forum I was looking at which seam pretty useful:

General Questions

1) What is your budget?
£0 - £900 maybe a bit more if its exactly what I want.

2) What size notebook would you prefer?
13" - 14"

3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
UK - Probably off the internet.

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Not really as I've only ever had one laptop - a Comapq which has a pretty bad build quality so I'm a bit warey. I want something which is solid.

5) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
Browsing the internet, skype, word processing occasional game.

6) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
I will be taking the laptop places like uni so I want it to be as light as possible. Will be used as my main PC.

7) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games or types of games?
Sometimes, mostly FPS like Counter-Strike Source. Pretty much all I play. Would be good if it could play more recent stuff also.

8) How many hours of battery life do you need?
The more the merrier! Min 3 I guess...

9) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
Don't mind to much.

10) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
Windows Vista for now. Maybe Linux on SD cards if it had a card reader built in.

Screen Specifics

11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=29271#resolution) would you prefer?

1280x800 would be ok I guess, don't think you get much more on a 13 inch screen...
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=29271#glossy)?
Don't mind, Would like an LED one though for battery power saving...

Build Quality and Design

13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Sort of, but mostly something that isn't going to break or scratch to easily as it will be moved about quite a bit.

14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
Quite along time, so would like futured proofed things like DDR3...

Notebook Components

15) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 500GB? Do you want a SSD drive?
A decent size as I can always upgrade it my self, I also have a terabyte drive which everything is on so wouldn't matter to much. Would rather stay away from SSD though since there waaaaay to expensive atm...

16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?
Yes - DVD-RW don't think I'd use a blueray enough for it to be fesable.

Other things I would like are:
Backlit keyboard
Maybe an SD card reader
Something nice and light weight and will not break easily
Wireless N
Bluetooth
Possibly a port replicator for the future as this will be my main computer and I plan on plugging it into my larger monitor, hence i'm ok with the 13inchs.
Firewire is not important to me.

I hope i'm not asking to much, I know i'll probably have to comprimise on some of the features I want, but something close to that would be really good!

I've just been looking at a Dell Studio XPS 13, but i read a review which didn't rate its keyboard very highly.

Also saw a few nice Samsungs, but i've lost track of which ones... :S

But anyway, it will be much apreciated for and help you might be able to give me.
Thanks again!
Alex

+1 for that,
it'll be hard to find (if at all) a half decent GPU on anything less than a 15", not sure how well IGPs hndle games these days (my guess is very badly) so would recommend at least this card, another alternative would be a Dell Studio 17 (nice big screen) my brother uses his for exactly what you want it for, and it also plays games fairly decently (not as well as the Novatech one though)

ok so you are wanting a 14" gamer? occasional game, in my experience means that if you underspec the graphics card there will be one particular game that you want to play that you can't :)
so dont scrimp on the graphics

not to mention good gfx card these days speeds up cad and photoshop and the like just in case :)

I dont think they do them anymore but zepto did a nox a14 with a geforce 9600 in it

I would ask our friends at Novatech whether a gaming 14" is feasible

by the way powerful 14" notebooks often have a chassis that is not that far off a 15.4", something to think about, and the weight is about the same anyway due to major components being identical

also think about heat dissipation, more power in a smaller space means a hotter notebook, ending with using coolers and other things making bulk a problem

the X55 MV is great, price performance, I am really impressed with even the cheaper version
but the x70 is the daddy

both unfortunately are 15.4" but hey its 1.4 inches, plus theres a bigger selection of bags for this size :)

Thank you for your replies :D

I think the best thing I can do at the moment is maybe go into somewhere like PCWorld and look at the screen sizes and get a feel for them. I do like the small and high portability a 13 inch could offer as it will be in my bag to and from uni alot.
I did look at the Novatech x55 and it does look very nice specially for the price tag. Just is kinda heavy looking. Also not sure about the battery sticking out the back like that..

I am really quite liking this http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home/Laptops/laptop-studio-xps-13/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-studio-xps-13&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&ref=lthp

Its a Dell Studio XPS 13, pretty much everything I want. Has both dedicated graphics and IGP so battery consumption isn't too high.

It might be that I just forget about gaming since it is very fare I have time for it really. And if I feel the need, a 360 might be in order.

With that in mindm would any of the Novatech 13inchers be recomendable?

Thanks for you time =]

I'll take a look at that Thesis - this is quite ironic, my laptop atm is starting to fall apart as I type this. One of the keys just randomly fell off :S

How do we feel about the nVidia 9300M GS with 256/512MB of dedicated RAM?
Is it any use?
Looking at some Asus laptops at the moment they look quite nice, just not seen any prices in their guide yet...

Whatever you do - do NOT buy from Pc World, Staples... anything without asking one of us in the know first? Sorry to slam you here thesis, but that laptop your selling would be no good for anyone who wants to do any gaming. Intel Graphics chips are absolutely useless, got one in my laptop and can't even run GTA:SA on low settings with more than 20fps... the X55 is your best choice imo amck77 :).

ok if youre not bothered about gaming too much, then of course IGP's are fine
the 9300 cards are ok for some games, had half life 2 running on one okish

I suppose it depends on exactly what games you like

oh and I have been to Dell and back............one word FAIL

Yes for sure, somebody on here will always be willing to help you, personally would not touch anybody apart from Novatech but that my personal opinion, not had much luck with Dell either had major issues with there PSU's

Yeah no way am I buying from pc world unless then had a very good deal on or something...

So Dell don't sound to good, i know a few people with them and all the computers in my old school were Dells. Just thought they might do since they XPS Studio had everything I wanted.

And yes Half life 2 would be the sort of game I might play if I ever got around to it. Don't have alot of time to play games very often, just nice to be able to...

I'd like to buy from novatech as I think most of there stuff is priced pretty well, just not sure if you'd be able to get cheap spares of the likes of ebay in the future. Also all the pc's I have bought from here are very good value for money and there still going well, but there very flimsy. I wouldn't want this with a laptop.

Sorry J1993, but you link didn't seam to work :S

I guess i'll carry on hunting for other laptops other then this dell, but maybe this novatech one will be the one to go for...

What do we think of the Samsung X460? Even the X360 if it was so expensive...

http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/detail/spec.do?group=itbusiness&type=notebookcomputers&subtype=xseries&model_cd=MKGX460MSAXEU&fullspec=F
Thinking that gaming really isn't important to me so won't mind it not being able to handle games. And if I ever really feel like I want to then I will get an xbox or something.

How much is it? Plus PC Gaming > Consoles, especially for FPS!

Around the £800 mark.
Yes I know, never been one for the controllers but I think I could live with it since most of my friends have 360's...

For that sort of money the X55 or above would be money better spent imo, more bang for your buck :D.

I have found in another forum that apparently the Samsung X460 is now being discontinued I haven't seen this anywhere else. Does anybody know if this is true? And if it is, would it be wise to buy a discontinued laptop?

I have seen a pretty good deal at laptops direct where I could buy this laptop, if you buy there 3 year warranty package they will give you a new laptop of the same value at the end of the 3 years. How does that sound? Not sure if there is some sort of catch =S

How come it says the underdog has been banned?

Samsung used to put great high end components graphics wise in their laptops but for some reason are holding back.
at an £800 mark I would still go for an x55
