View Full Version : Help with graphics card or monitor - don't know what prob is
I thought my nearly three year old crt monitor was dying as it has developed a habit of flashing in pink at me - the whole screen has a pale pink tinge to it. Sometimes it's the whole screen, sometimes there are clear darker pink horizontal lines amidst the whole pickness. Sometimes it's just normal white - but increasingly less. Anyway, new monitor now and same problem.
My graphics card is a Radeon 9200 SE, and apart from finding that out, I don't know anything else about the internal workings - PLEASE can someone help ??? Is my pc dying now ??? PC is same age as monitor.
(aargh it's doing it again!)

mmm.. Have you tried changing the GFX card, or just checking its firmly inserted into the motherboard?

It could be that your speakers are too close to your screen.
Or it could be dead pixels
try this its a dead pixel fixer it worked on my friends PSP when he had some dead pixels, i don't know wether it has the same effect on a PC but its worth a shot.

mmmm..
I doubt it can be speakers, as 3 speakers of mine are by each side, and one on top.
Pixels: When a pixel 'dies' in a monitor, as far as im aware thats got nothing to do with the computer being able to repair it.
Its the actual screen thats at fault, not the system.
In HP's case, Im 99% sure his problem isn't down to 'dead pixels'.
I would suggest opening the side of your case, taking the GFX card out, see if there's any dust/fluff around the chip; if so, blow it all out.
Re-insert the GFX card, making sure its nice and firmly in, then re-try and see what happens.

King Georgie - I googled my problem and the responses did include speakers (amongst several dozen other possibilities), and mine are right next to the monitor and always on. I've turned them off tonight to see what happens......
Big Beere - I've never opened my pc, (I am good at using them though!) so not sure what the graphics card looks like (bit like driving without know what the bushes do)? Please bless my poor ignorance and tell me where to locate it - will it be the bit the monitor cables plugs directly into or is that too obvious?
Thanks for your help

Lets hope it is the speakers causing the problem! - Nice and easy way to recover your little problem :P
Have you always had the speakers next to your monitor?
Hit the nail on the head! As they say! Yep, thats correct, the gfx card is where the monitor cable plugs into!
As you mentioned, your system is about 3 years old, and you have never opened it before, so im guessing there will be a lot of fluff!

HP
having speakers next to a CRT could cause distortion and some discolouring, due to the magnetic field produced by the magnets on the speakers.
Move your speakers away, as far as possible. Then press the MENU button on you monitor, and navigate to an icon/text thats says somethihng like Degauss. Select that to remove any residual ionisation of the screen.
This may solve it. tell us how you get on.
Big Beere - have had monitor on for a while with speakers off and at the edge of the desk and so far so good. Will open up pc at the weekend - gonna need some daylight. Judging by the amount of fluff I disturbed by replacing the monitor there could well be a few tonnes of the stuff inside the pc too ..... (and now I know where the card is thanks  )
Another stupid question, how do you safely clean the inside - vacuum on very gentle, anti-static duster, or take a large breath and blow it all out ???
Chewie - have moved the monitors and turned them off this evening - looking good (but keeping fingers crossed!). There weren't any words on my monitor menu, but there was a magnet with a line crossing it out, so I picked that one and it all shimmied a bit then said DONE. I always thought that was just a warning not to put magnets next to the screen!!!
Cheers

I take it this means it's cleared up at this time?
Thing is, the monitors you see (or used to be able to get, dunno of any that still do it) with speakers mounted on the side of the monitor, are shielded, which means that although they still have magnets in them, they have an almost neglible magnetic signature (military tech speak, sorry guys).
So, unless your speakers when you buy them state that they are magnetically shielded or designed to be near a monitor, NEVER place them near a monitor or an data transmission lines for that matter eg cables running from pc to monitor, USB, Printer leads, network leads etc.
That applies to Power leads too, never have them running parallel to a data lead, that is closer than 4-6" as you'll get cross talk as its known.

Glad you got it sorted HP :D
George
Are dead pixels are sometimes caused by using Raid on your puter?
Fix them dead pixel one and for all:

Your welcome HP,
I don't think your monitor is suffering from dead pixels, That is mainly confined to LCD's and is a design fault. Most LCD's have dead pixels the important thing is "How many".
Kind regards George
