Change the database type or check your details. (or both)

EDIT: You did make a database for it right?

Darker X
13-06-2009, 11:27 AM
shouldnt need to manually make a new database - as long as those are the correct details it should automatically generate one in the Database server using a massive SQL query

Darker X

also try 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost - not all detect localhost on some servers :P

I've always made a database for it and it's always worked, so just give it a go

MyBB should create one automatically - i have never had to create one for it just fill the details for that page and it works - but tbh i dont rate MyBB as a decent forum system - the sites i have done in the past for clients always perfer ones such as phpBB or VB - both are easy to customise and easy to setup

Just opinions, I highly rate MyBB and dont rate phpbb. Vb is expensive so i've never used it.

MyBB should create one automatically - i have never had to create one for it just fill the details for that page and it works - but tbh i dont rate MyBB as a decent forum system - the sites i have done in the past for clients always perfer ones such as phpBB or VB - both are easy to customise and easy to setup

Meh, I'm just really confused.

Just opinions, I highly rate MyBB and dont rate phpbb. Vb is expensive so i've never used it.

hmm should i get phpmyadmin?

I just installed xampp and tried. You need to make a database, didnt work without. Remember your hosts prefix on the table.

If you want to play PM me for a user account: http://94.171.122.66/forum (http://94.171.122.66/)

I think whether you need to create a database or not will depend on mySQL permissions for the MyDB user.

McLarenV's problem "Could not connect to database server at locahost..." is happening before any attempt to create a database or tables is made. Assuming the server is running, he probably needs to create the user/password he is supplying to the MyDB form/

phpBB has so much more to offer than MyBB + its not a greta interface even with so modding - VB can be free like mine depending if you have a creative web licence which i have because of web designing and hosting i run. The licence was free and unlimited - VB is so powerful, easy to use and there are millions of mods which are easy as **** to install.

---------------------------------------------------

Like the guy above said - make sure your table prefixes are the same as what you set in the MyBB setup - also its very odd that you have to create the new database - in the past when i have used MyBB it does it all for me - again this is because of the SQL access permissions (aslo as mentioned above) - you should make sure that you have a fully enabled admin mysql account that you are connecting to the database with.

I wouldn't use a fully admin enabled mySQL account for MyBB. As admin, I'd create the database and a mySQL user, eg. mybb@localhost, with the rights it needs for the forum database.

Possible cost issues aside, I wouldn't use VB as it commits me to a Windows platform. Apache, php and MySQL work on "anything".

My forum started life in asp. I rewrote it in php as I wanted to move to just using Linux at home. Apart from this desire, I seem to remember that in this case, there was a cost issue with Windows for my home hosting. asp cost nothing but the free PWS server would only support a couple of connections. I think I would have had to purchase IIS (which I think was several hundred pounds) to host from home.

my VB is running off of Linux webserver - works fine so you dont need windows platform and like i said you can get it for free legally with a creative licence - ASP is my most hated language.... its outdated, out performed and PHP can do anything it can do plus more :P

Must have missed something above. Are you using mono?

Agreed re ASP/VBScript. I never tried the JScript it was also supposed to support.

That's what i thought. But, I'm very sure that those username and password should work, because thats what i used in SMF installation....

Upgraded Webmin to 1.480
This is the MySQL User Permissions Page..

It turns out the issue was the user. I set the host to localhost and it worked perfectly, totally unforseen mind.

Confirm you can connect to the server with those details, eg.

jon@worthy:~> mysql -u jon -p
Enter password:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 5
Server version: 5.0.67 SUSE MySQL RPM

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

mysql> quit
Bye
jon@worthy:~>

If that works OK, one possibility I can think of concerns passwords. See:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/old-client.html

Not quite sure what you are asking there.

mySQL uses permissions at different levels from User level down to columns on a table. Have a read through this article:
