as a lover of music i like music of all varities and like anyone with a real brain i understand that as far as mainstream music goes, metal by the 'hmv' definition is by far one of the best genres.. lets not argue about this ok :P

but overrall mainstream music is pretty pathetic really..

Craig armstrong is a Living Legend in the light of music and i will dare anyone to say otherwise, every single piece of work ever written by this guy is amazing

many of you are prob wondering who the **** is craig armstrong>?
well firstly i assure you.. you have all heard his stuff. you just dont realise it yet.
he is a contemporary/electronic/classical/experimental artist who hails from scotland and is renowned for his film scores.

just to highlight a small proportion of his work

Greatest musician is probably a combined composer and player of Paganni's talent tucked away somewhere doing recording work.

I'd imagine that the he/she tucked away doing recording (session) work might still be alive... Just we don't know what talents exist...

Living and for songs, for 2 off the top of my head, I might go for some of Eric Bogle's work. From the pointlessness of war, eg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG48Ftsr3OI to maybe the sad tale of a poor little dog who got splatted while trying to make love to a bigger dog (Chawawwa vs Great Dane sort of thing!).

Or maybe I'd go for if in the right mood, a Tom Waits who can move from say Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueDCuOcG6v0) or perhaps Singapore (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHpZe5x2cWw)

'gracious, that was really cold, i mean cool'

the only thing that could ever beat that is someone using their wilkins instead of sticks...

In terms of versatility, innovation, and standing the test of time, Paul McCartney! The guy is a musical genius! He practically invented Hip-Hop 10 years before the idea was even conceived. You just have to listen to Sgt Pepper's, it still sounds fresh today, over 40 years later.

But in reality, how can you choose just one? There are so many greats.

And of course you are entitled to your opinion. I'd hazard a guess and say you're under 20 years of age?

Another great would be, Stevie Wonder.

NP :D i respect almost all music and musicians but doesnt mean its to my taste.. i wouldnt say i have no taste.. its just refined like a red wine.. you like it or you dont.. music greatly depends on my mood and there is music that i am never in the mood for. i have reletively vast musical knowledge and experience to the extent that i could turn on any mainstream radio station and i wouldnt know half the songs being played.. it takes a lot of effort to get like that... i know your mainstay of music... and i have my thoughts of them based onlistening to them.. << could you say the same for the music i listen to? whether its simply not your taste or bluntly dont like it.. in the name of music i would say you should try it :P you never know you could be surpised ;)

Stevie wonder is great ...songs in the key of life is a fantastic album. Nathan Watts bass playing on that is just immense. I got into Miles Davis after hearing "so what" ...awesome jazz trumpeter.

In that realm ..well more fusion really I spose ...Allan Holdsworth is a mighty guitarist
