New Gaming Laptop ?

Which machine to go for , Novatech has the I7 gaming laptop, or alienware, 2.8g duel core with 260m in sli ?

Im confused, please advise what you think , they are roughly the same money as my budget, 2k ish, give or take 200 quid.

Please let me know your opinions , especially if you have either machine, also I hear the ASUS is pretty good ?

Its down to you guys, what should I get, whats important to me is longevity really, Im only playing wow atm, and probably wont be hammering it too much, as wow takes up a lot of my time, but want something that is gunna be good for a few years yet if some other MMO comes along that I wanna play, not interested in FPS games on PC, would prefer to play them on me PS3.

try the x1 its comes with a gtx280 and you can sli another one later on plus a massive 18 inch screen

do you really need a core i7? nvidia were spouting some stuff about it only giving you an extra couple of FPS over a decent dual or quad core processor, (havent tested this myself yet though :) )

one thing to search for,,, Alienware complaints (forums etc) then search for Novatech complaints
the results will speak for themselves,

I myself cancelled an alienware order due to being led around in circles with no sign of my laptop and opted for a novatech machine, glad I did

get the i7 if you need i7 capabilities, but dont buy the i7 just for gaming as its not necessarily the best gaming platform,
have a think about whats most important SLI graphics in the x1 with a quad core processor

or the core i7 whih nicely shows up as 8 cores in windows :) but it can only take 1 gtx 280

please also note the gtx 280m is only the 9800 core, not the gtx 2xx core so basically like a 9800 gtx

Ah thanks I didnt realise that, also could you expand on the GPU bit, ie which is the one I should be going for I didnt realise there were different types of gtx GPU's.

If you really are deciding only on either N'tech or A'ware, it really is no contest - N'tech are very well thought of in the national press for their gaming laptops, and whilst A'ware were very well thought of, now that they have been bought out by a load of old balls, they just arent in the same league anymore.

if you browse around the web you will see lots of reviews of the latest mobile gtx cards

the 260mgtx is pretty much a geforce 9600 on a smaller die

the 280 mgtx is the 9800 on a smaller die

so you are not getting the same chip as the desktop 260 or 280

mobile versions are usually a lower model than their similar named desktop counterparts

for example in mine I have a Geforce 8800M Gtx which equates to a desktop 8800 GT (not gtx)
however these new gtx m2xx cards are actually the last gen 9 series chip and not the new 2xx chips

hope that makes sense

by the way they still perform extremely well

Hi Horis, Welcome to novatech. could not agree more with the above, Novatech's service is excellent 99% of the people here would love to help you out if you have issues and never ask anything in return except a thanks! basically what i'm getting at is customer service is what people are looking for as well as cheap quality products.

dont get the alienware, my friend got one, and for far he has had frequent crashes when playing games or video files.

Ok so , I think im settled on an X1 from Novatech with 1x 1g 280m GPU, Just cant decide on whether to go for the duel 2.8Ghz chip or the quad 2.0Ghz chip, Opinions please and thanks very much for all you comments.

Get the C2D, for gaming the higher speed on the C2D will trounce the quad. If it was me I'd also change from 3x 500gb to 2x 320gb to save £160 quid. If you really need to space can buy a 1TB drive for like £60-70.

Or get the 3x320gb X90GTX which is i7 for £2140 ish

saying that Future games could take advantage of the quad cores capabilities 2ghz or over usually manages very well these days

it is a lot to spend on a computer though :)
I have to admit to be tempted towards a desktop for my next machine depending of course what comes out in the next year :)

Ye thing is, the X90 GTX you talk about is 2.5g per core (think) so wouldnt that be much better long term that going for the Quad 2.0G ? And for not that much more money ?

Also , im pretty much decided but would you go for the X90 over say a 500 quid cheaper duel as in the X80 ?

Nope, vista come in both 64bit and 32bit. When purchasing a laptop, if it has 4gb of ram and dedicated gpu ram then you idealy need a 64bit OS to utilise it all.

Lol no, youve miss understood me hear.

When buuying from novatech for instance it asks if you want an OS (for an extra cost ofcourse)

You then go down the list on the novatech website and select the OS you want eg Home premium 64bit.


Most other sites do this too.


On the asumption you did understand me correctly and you bought a laptop without an OS and a seperate RETAIL windows vista home premium (as an example) you can indeed choose either 32bit or 64bit when installing.

Only an OEM license is limited to either 32bit OR 64bit.

BTW is striped array or raid 5 better regarding the HD access speed ?

The only two real high end, top of the line laptop choices are the Novatech X1 and the Asus W90.

We have just been in a head to head round up in a major mag coming out this month.

I wont spoil the result - but I am glad I work for Novatech as we murdered everything else in the round up and the mag (which we do not advertise in) say it was the fastest laptop they have ever tested.
