Just after installing Spyware Doctor and Spysweeper, I started having a problem with Internet Explorer (IE).

I go to Tools --> Internet Options and I get an error message

"This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

Well, I can't do that, because I'm running Win ME and there's no such thing.

I tried reinstalling IE, but that had no effect other than changing my home page to Microsoft, which I didn't want, and I still can't access Internet Options.

The installation of Spyware Doctor and Spysweeper might be red herrings, that is, totally unrelated.

Are there settings in the registry to change and will that solve my problem ?

Can you help please ?

firefox is a better option but try and get your PC healthy first

put spybot search and destroy, free from http://www.safer-networking.org

there is tonnes of free BOGUS security and antispyware software that will make your machine worse, so theres only a few apps I would really trust.

give spybot a go and tell us how you get on.

Unfortunately I can't get Spybot to work at all.

I had it working on my PC till about 6 months ago, then it stopped working.

Updates couldn't be downloaded (bad checksum every time).

I've tried re-downloading the full package, it just doesn't work - the advice from Spybot is that I need to install XP (which I can't on this old PC).

I wish I could scrap IE, however,
1) there are some sites that I use regularly that aren't qualified for (and don't work) in Firefox

2) I maintain websites for 2 charities, and need to be able to test them in IE.

ok - its now unknown for spyware to be really devious and sabotage Spybot search and destroy from working.

what you need to do is avoid using the auto update feature (for instance at my current and previous work which the network stops me from doing)

and download the latest update patterns as a seperate executable file from http://www.safer-networking.org

run it, then start up spybot this should get nasties off your system. :)

Or - downlaod the latest final IE7.

I've been running IE7 for about 2 weeks and not had any problems with it.
