View Full Version : Shutdown or Sleep?
Who here doesn't use the sutdown function, and just puts it to sleep instead?
Also, is using sleep instead of shutdown detrimental in any way to your pc?
Because I haven't had any problems resuming and gaming and stuff all day, and am tempted to use sleep from now on.

To be fair. Mine boots fast enough so I just turn it off at night. No point wasting 12 hours of it's life span whilst I take a nap in my bed :p

Its on 24/7 mainly, but when it's off, it's off. I do not trust sleep. It's never too happy when it wakes up. I know the feeling well. It's OK without my Overclock, but no.

:SCARE:Shutdown for me, Dont trust Sleep, Suddenly wakes in the Night... Spooky
I've always used shutdown myself. But since sleep is working so great for me at the moment, shame not to use it. :p
What I now do is turn off at night, but put it to sleep during the day. Works brilliantly (so far).

I always use shut down at night, simply because I like my pc to be fully refreshed when I press the on button the next day :p
But another reason is that my motherboard has loads of blue LED's on it, which to turn off I have to flick the switch on the back of my psu once my pc has shut down.

Antz, you can turn the LED's off in the BIOS.

i usually shut it down but i do use the sleep function when i know im gonna jump back on the pc after doing various things, never had a problem with the sleep function but still i dont see the point in leaving it on while i sleep or if i know im gonna be out a long time, so i still shut it down..

I always shutdown. PC stays on most of the day but off when retiring to bed.

My laptop is on all day and when I'm not using it I just close the lid.
I guess that would be sleep...

I usually put it into sleep. I've read somewhere, that turning your computer on after you turn it off. Is more detrimental to its life span, then leaving it on all the time. But that's most likely for people, constantly turning it off whenever they leave it alone for a few hours in the day. But one thing that was annoying about sleep. Is the fact my keyboard kept turning it on. (I randomly found this out, when I was checking my USB drives in Device manager in Vista.) It was a simple fix.
But easily the best thing about sleep, is that it you can leave whatever you were doing on.

With this laptop and my old computer (when it was working properly), I never, ever touch Sleep or Hibernate modes, I don't know why. I just turn it off when I want to, then turn them back on. Although a few weeks ago with my desktop, I would pull the power cable after 2 hours of it being on because of one problem or another ::op:.
I shut my main PCs off completely when not in use. I hibernate my notebooks unless there's a real need for a shutdown.

Hibernate has all the benefits of Sleep, apart from the fact it takes a few seconds more to restore the desktop. On the other hand, it saves a boat-load of electricity - it certainly seems the best compromise...
We have sleep set for one hour on our PCs & turn them off when not needing them for a period of time.

Mostly Turn it off at night, but use the sleep button on my keyboard if i'm going to leave it for more than a couple of hours.
What's the difference between hibernate and sleep? :S
all this talk on sleep is making me tired :/

Soft off mostly. Never found waking up after sleep reliable enough on my systems,

Hibernate, shutting down is a pain, you have to reopen everything you were working on, and it wastes time. I really hate waiting.
