Hi,
I'm getting pretty frustrated at the moment. I keep getting this BSOD error whenever using 3d applications. I hear it's a hardware related issue, and I'm thinking it may possibly be the CPU?
What I've done to try and fix the problem:
Change CPU from 3.24-3.30ghz (3.25ghz used to be stable.)
Use EIST and C1 CPU enhancements.
Adjust RAM speed and change Slot in Mobo.
Change multiplier and bus speed.
Disable Physx
Change Hardware acceleration (sound)
I've had about 15 BSOD's today and am getting frustrated. I've no idea why I keep getting them either. It used to be fine! Now, I can't even run it stable on 3.24ghz.
Just before the BSOD, The sound always pauses on the current sound and it sounds distorted or crackily, then I get a blue screen.
What is weird however, is that today I've had about 3 different BSOD's, but the majority being 0x0000009C. Others where just ' IRQL_DRIVER_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL'.
But mainly just 'MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION'.
I think I'll check every connection, try run it @ default settings and then see if it's stable. If it isn't, I suppose it's the Mobo?

Try running everything at stock for now. See if it still does it. If not, slowly reapply your overclock in steps.

what voltages are you pushing through the ram, and what timings have you got it set at. my guess it's ram related bud

Ok I'll do that. Cheers.
I just find it strange how one minute it can run absolutely fine @ 3.25ghz on default Vcore etc, and now I' can't even get it stable at all whatever voltages, speeds etc.

Actually Cal, I've tried the RAM @ 900 and 700mhz and no improvement at either setting. It's just at the default timings. Normal voltage for 700mhz and +2 for 900.

When you say it use to be fine, how long ago was that? With the weather getting hotter atm, your temps must be getting to high and not staying stable.

0x0000009c is direct X error try updating it irq not less or equal can be Ram or GPU error personally i would drop everything to stock and update both direct x and graphics drivers.
also with IRQ not less or eqaul it can be overclock related you should never up mhz on an unstable system unless you get it stable and with teh current Heatwave i suggest dropping to stock clocks.
Machine check excemtion is OS related and normally happens with a bad overclock and the OS not recognising the new instruction set from bios can also cause IRQ not less or eqaul meaning you have 2 or more things sharing the same IRQ instruction set and the not less or = normally relates to PCI-E bus and ram
all info can be found on Techguys forum as well as on Microsoft knowledge base :D

Used to be fine last week!
However, I did run OCCT and it reported error's on Core 0 OR Core 1(independantly) - at max cpu usage; my 3d applications only use about 60-80%.. - temps did not exceed 60C.

I've got Directx updated to March 2009 and latest GPU drivers etc.
I'll drop it back to stock anyway and will report back.
Thanks for all your help (everyone).

OCCT is useless. For testing, use Prime95 and run small FFTs to stress your CPU to 100%. Overclock your CPU as much as you can for now and then work on the RAM secondly.

direct x updated again in june i think there is also a new july version too for games like sf4 and Fuel :D

Ok, thanks for the help Dutchie.
Out of interest, is there anyway the whole CPU:RAM ratio could be a factor? - as I've only got 1 RAM stick I'll never be able to get it nice and low. At best it's 3:5.

It's 800MHz rated I presume? The highest FSB you could use therefore is 250 for your RAM to run at it's rated 800MHz speed. For 900MHz on the RAM you can have 281FSB.
As your RAM might be holding you back. Put +0.1v on to it. Slacken the timings to 5-5-5-15 if you haven't done so already.
What is the multiplier of the E4600?

It's 12X multi.
12 X 270 got me 3.24ghz and I put the ram to 3.66 - choice of 'auto' '2.44' '3.66' '4.44' - or something similar. I didn't use auto as that put the speed to 1000mhz; 3.66 or whatever the precise amount put it @ 900mhz.

Right, I see. That is a strange way of putting the ratios. I would say push to 333FSB and drop your multi to 10 for now, see if the RAM drops with the auto ratio. It should drop to a lower 1:1.2 or 1:1.5 if you're lucky.

The E4600 is a FSB 800 2.4 GHz CPU. For some reason gigabyte's set timings of 5-7-7-20 at high memory clocks and 2V.
Ctrl-F1 opens advanced options in the bios. But I'd say, sod it, and settle for 3.2 GHz FSB 1066, which is about DDR2-850 clock if memory serves...lol
But even 3.2 GHz is not a gimme on those smaller Core2Duos. Lowering multiplier to X11 may help though. That would be about 2.93 GHz, which would do me.
I take it you've added 0.1V to the CPU VCore?
Kelvin_C-J
03-07-2009, 12:22 AM
Well I can't get the 'chip stable @ 3.30ghz so no point in trying for that.
I'll try 1066 first then if that works I'll try 1333.
But, you're saying i should use multi x10 rather than x12?
Kelvin_C-J
03-07-2009, 12:33 AM
Well, unfortunately the RAM doesn't automatically change.
And, when using a multi of 10X, My OS think's it's still 12X (same with 11X). So BIOS reports 2.66ghz, but OS reports 3.19ghz.
TheMadDutchDude
03-07-2009, 12:37 AM
That's strange. Just leave it at 12x then. No point changing it if it has no effect although it really should.
To be fair. I'd go with what System said. 3GHz is still a pretty nifty speed!

03-07-2009, 12:45 AM
It's @ 12X and I've got a 1066 Bus speed. 12X 266 = 3.20ghz at normal vcore and RAM @ 889mhz - lowest 'weird' setting and +0.1V for RAM. I'll test it now and see. If it's not stable, then I'll lower the multi.
Thanks for everybody's help. It's greatly appreciated and recieved.

Hope I'm not confusing things here, boys. But I can't remember when I saw CPU-Z get clock speed wrong. The bios really controls that and multiplier. And memory stuff is usually right in CPU-Z too.
