Ever considered AMD? If you're going single core they're meant to be a lot better. In fact their dual core are probably better than those Intel ones too. Core 2 Duo knocks the socks of the Athlon 64 X2 though.

dude, he asked which one of those 2, and none of them are athlon, maybe he is gonna get it on the LGA775 platfrom then get quad core (which fits on that socket) when it comes out :P

only problem with waiting is bought a 6600GT 256MB christmas last year and started having problems with it ie atifacts when using new drivers. I got the card replaced but it was still the same so i came here and asked for some advice and was told that the gfx card doesnt like my mobo but 1 way round it was to use an old driver 67.03 witch worked up until about 6 weeks ago. Sooo now im getting new set up to put the card in to find out if its fooked if so its still under warrenty just.
What mobo is it? let me guess... VIA chipset?

ah,okay
back to the orignal, either of those cpus - they are pretty evenly matched.
but... in a years time, the dual core *may* be the wise choice, maybe. It will also feel faster under windows.
