View Full Version : Which DVD Writers Actually Work For More Than Five Minutes?

Hello

I'm just looking up which DVD writer to get as part of my forthcoming parts purchase from Novatech and I'm none the wiser as to which one would be best to get, from a reliability point of view.

My experience of DVD writers so far is that of a 100% failure rate after very little use, so I would like my next one to actually work properly.

Could anyone recommend a particular one to go for (SATA type) that ideally has a reputation for not being useless junk that breaks after five minutes?

Thanks very much

:)

I have never had aproblem with LG, been using them for years. Liteon tended to be hit and miss in the past. Panasonic/Matsushita Matshita are also reliable

Thanks, I'll have a look at what is available with those makes.

I have been looking at the Samsung S223Q as I have read that these are particularly quiet - which is a consideration for the system I am putting together. How do Samsung rate in the reliability stakes?

I've had NEC drives for the past 5 years+ - never had a problem...

i've read many horror stories about samsung drives, unless they've changed in the last few months without me noticing i wouldn't buy one, however if quietness is an important factor you could just go for it if you don't mind returning?

Thank you both.

Right, I'll scrap the Samsung idea then! I'm not going to have another DVD writer failure if I can help it.

Just going look into the other makes mentioned.

Ive got both the

(http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?OPT-7201S)Optiarc Lightscribe AD-7201S (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?OPT-7201S)

and the SAMSUNG SH223F...I like the samsung better and can highly recommend it but opinions will vary. I know certain samsungs have a high failure rate, cant remember the exact model though, certainly not the SH223F!

my pc has a Samsung sata drive and a pioneer IDE

i use the Samsung SH223F as my main reader and writer and have not have a problem with it in the 7 months of owning it

that said the pioneer IDE is far better at writing to DL media

i would have normally just bought a Pioneer drive and i did but then sent it back
and got it replaced twice due to the amount of noise and vibration coming from the latest Pioneer Sata offerings

the latest pioneer sounded that bad it made my case rattle

I have 3 LGs right now... no problems. I've had Pioneers which have got a little tired - depends really how much you use them as well...

Agree with the above. Currently got a blu-ray writer on the lappy so a standard dvd rom in the comp at the mo... keeps issues to a minimum which is always nice :)

Thank you all.

Plenty to look into there. Looks as if most of them have the capability of lasting more than five minutes then!

Hi m8...

I couldn't agree more!

I've had 3x Optiarc, 1x Pioneer & 1x Samsung in the past 5 years that have all seemed to degrade in one area or another which is ****** annoying!

My latest Optiarc Lightscribe drive just started pissing me about last week, i have a couple of discs that it just wont read... Most annoyingly my COH disc, that I now need to re-install and it wont recognise the ****** thing...

I've had issues too, especially with samsung, got a sony atm which seems to be doing well. I'd rather pay a bit more and have reliability, it seems like there pushing for ultra cheap all the time.

In the end I made a partially-random choice of the LG unit.

I'll report back if this one goes the way of all the others!

lol. Well my Lite-on drive works fine, but it's loud as **** when reading discs... kinda annoying. Thankfully I don't need to use it much since I download most things these days.

Pioneer have a good rep, Optiarc 7200s is good too.
Won't go far wrong sticking with those. Generally good support and firmware updates for them too.
What disks are you intending to burn mostly?

I ended up getting this LG in the end: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/products/a947x1y0z1p0s0n0m142

I expect I'll be using rewritable DVDs mostly, or at least trying to!

Haha my dad only recently got his Samsung Lightscribe replaced by Novatech.

At the moment it looks as though SONY offer the better drives, although SONY usually do offer the best stuff, and amazingly their DVD-RW's cost under a million lol.

Either SONY or LG atm :)

I can't bring myself to try mine yet, in case it doesn't work and I get annoyed with it.

That's what Novatech help desk and returns are for :D

As in help desk I mean they will replace it for you... you cannot seek mental advice from them ;)

My psychiatrist accepts computer parts returns, so I wouldn't need to call Novatech. ;)

I bought a generic drive for about £30 which lasted about three months. I have just taken a old dvd rom out of an Acer media centre unit which must be 7 years old and it works perfectly.

The two drives in my signature below are around three and five years old respectively (CD only recordable drives have not been around for some time now), have been used extensively and both still produce excellent burns as checked by Nero DiscSpeed. Updating to the latest firmware is a must.

NEC/Optiarc are now owned by Sony (as of 2006) and as far as I am aware drives are the same. Sony seems to be sold as a retail product now with Optiarc being OEM.

Yeah Lite Ons were always quite good, however I can't seem to find any anymore, maybe they have go out of business who knows.

Optiarc are good, as are Pioneer. Others vary wildly from model to model unfortunately. I had an LG fail the other month but then I had another one for years.

pioneer 107 drive which is about 5 years old, no problems with at all

I would say they are the best. Would avoid Liteon, they seem to have a lot of failure rates

When i first built my pc i fitted a optiarc sata dvd re-writer. Despite it being cheap it has lasted well and even when i pushed in the power cable slightly too hard at an angle and broke some of the edge pins off it still works a dream
Personally old is the best and i would go for IDE.

all i can say, is Sony and HP seem to be the good drives for now, I've never had one of theirs fail on me

I had a LiteOn CD-writer once and I wasn't happy with it, the drive tray didn't shut properly and it used to rattle alarmingly in use, wouldn't have one of those again.

Then I had an NEC dvd-writer which I had for 5-6 years b4 it gave up the ghost, now I have a Sony which I've had for the last 2 years or so, have no complaints about these.

The only odd thing is the Sony won't read any of the DVD's the NEC burned, although my PS3 has no trouble reading them. Strange...

to be totally honest i can't remember any CD/DVD drive fail on me ever

had samsung.. liteon.. pioneer and LG

none of them failed at all and were only replaced due to changes in case colour
or changing from IDE to Sata or sold with the system

i currently have a samsung Samsung S223f sata and a old pioneer 112D IDE that i have spray painted black

if you killing drives all the time I think its time to look at the media you are using.
