Cry??
Nothing can be done about that im affraid matey! No proof you ever bought it or that you ever had one in the first place and microsoft a certainly not going to give you one for free. What version of windows is it? eg.. vista home premium 64bit etc etc (I have methods that I shall not disclose for legal reasons into how dell manage to license a machine so easily....)

I did the same daft thing when I threw away the notebook with the W7 key in it.
Firstly, Belarc Advisor might find it off an existing install:

I'd wiped mine completely. But on signing in to the Windows 7 RC1 download page with my Microsoft Windows Live ID, I was offered the same key, and no need to download.

Might be a touch off topic, but how long do the keys last after being 'received'?

So tempted............
The Windows 7 Beta will expire on August 1, 2009 and the RC will expire on June 1, 2010

What happens when it expires? You can still use it but without updates? Or what?

Windows 7 RC will expire on June 1, 2010. So if you install the RC release you’ll either need to upgrade to the final version of Windows 7 before that date, or install a prior version of Windows.
It begins by shutting down every two hours then thats all folks.
How long can I test Windows 7?
This is a very important question. The Windows 7 Beta will expire on August 1, 2009 and the RC will expire on June 1, 2010. To avoid interruption, you'll need to rebuild your test machine using a valid version of Windows before the software expires. Windows will notify you that the expiration process is beginning, and two weeks later your PC will begin shutting down every two hours.

Now what? :(
I assume your talking about windows 7..just get a new key from the microsoft website:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/evalcenter/dd353205.aspx?ITPID=mscomsc
Go to the bottom of the page, select which version you already have, select it for download.....once you select the version, you may be asked to log-in to windows, then your taken to a page where you can download the software and your activation key will be displayed! P.s you wont need to actually download w7, its optional.

It sucks that it expires June 1st but the 2 hour shutdowns start March the 1st, 3 months before its meant to expire.
