Hi guys,
My pc is taking ages to load from logon, even with nearly everything disabled at startup. After the login screen the "welcome" screen stays there for about 20-30 seconds, after that goes it loads up alright. I've more or less come to the conclusion that this may be down to the registry having to go through all entries for all components etc. Is this true? If so, any way to defrag or clean the registry safely?

I have used Ccleaner's registry utility, but it hasn't done much I'm afraid.

Any thoughts?

Cheers in advance guys.

When you say everything is disabled at startup, do you mean you've removed stuff from the startup folder or that you've ran msconfig and unchecked stuff in the startup tab?

Windows XP always seemed to gradually deteriortate over time in a way that couldn't really be prevented, and a fresh reinstall was a good idea now and then. But vista doesn't seem to have that problem normally. I've never found a registry cleaner that does anything worthwhile tbh.

Nah, though not. I had XP 32 bit on an old system, and I gave it a fresh install every 6 months or so.

I've only disabled the programs at the moment. I'll delete them altogehter, once I establish that I really don't need them.

EDIT - Well what I did was delete those things I knew I didn't want or need, and enabled everything else. And it actually loaded a little bit faster.
