Right, I have a nice powerful laptop here with a ati 4670 mobility, and a intel p9900 with 4gb of 1066mhz ram.
So its quick!
What I want to do though is instal a version of linux onto a 2gb SD card that goes into the sd reader so I can book into there just to flick on the net etc and save power whilst only taking seconds to boot into the OS.. a bit like what you find on the eee pc 701.
The SD card is a 150x card so its reasonably quick too which is a plus, about as quick as a convetional 4200rpm netbook drive.
Any way, thats the spec (i have vista etc on the hard disc but am not willing to partition) so I need an OS that would suit me well.
If 2GB is not enough I can stretch to going out and buying a 8GB SD BUT I would rather not.
Andy
I was thinking linpus lite or linpus instant ON.... Also a free ISO mouting tool.... I had one that was only a demo and as such wont mount anything over 10mb now.

NimbleX is a distro I booted off a 512MB iPod shuffle some time back All pretty easy and really very impressive.

But there are lots of pendrive USB distros. Google is your friend.

The only success I've had is with NimbleX on a 512MB SD card. :(
This is created direct off the live CD desktop. FWIW you need to log in as root with password toor. It's slow to boot on this old SD card and not too elegant. The MySlax Creator method I used previously on the iPod with the ISO in Windows baulked at recognising NimbleX as Slackware.
I have some issue with my 2GB SD card or reader. Even wiping the partition with HP Drive Key Boot Utility and FAT and FAT32 formats can't fix this.
So I couldn't get USB Creator working off a Ubuntu Live CD or from Ubuntu with the ISO copied to the Ubuntu desktop as described here:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ubuntu-810-install-using-the-built-in-usb-installer/
Nor could I get a Windows install working with an ISO image and this command prompt U904 batch file utility with the SD card formatted FAT32:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-ubuntu-904-persistent-install-windows/
The install dies at the squashfs file install.
Hope you have more luck. This is very annoying. :furious:

Both Puppy (http://www.puppylinux.com/) and DSL (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/index.html) are very good USB options. And they look good too....

With 2GB of card, you've got an embarrassment of options. Pretty much anything will fit onto that.
I've got Whitebox 5 in front of me, running a graphical installation and my customer's application in a little over 300MB...
Also a free ISO mouting tool
mount. It's in every distribution.

In the Ubuntu camp there is either Xubuntu or Crunchbang that are both reasonably resource light. Arch Linux claim that they're a light weight distro too, or you could go with something like Gentoo and build it specifically for your needs - Depends how dirty you want to get.

This part seems quite fun. Select your choice of modules and "build" your own Slax:
