View Full Version : OC Advice on New PC!
Ive just ordered a new PC, see Signature for details.
Now suppose i was to OC this new rig for whatever reason what would be your suggested OC values? Im not looking to massively OC this PC or anything like that its just for future reference should i decide to OC it later on.
Thanks.

well the amd 955 black edition has an unlocked multi i believe and should easy be able to hit 3.6ghz on air without actually sitting in front of the pc and going through the bios and finding the sweet spot with your components its quite hard to give out values as all chips and motherboards overclock differently :-/

Yes, it also has an OC app, that lets you adjust values from inside the OS, so it is a lot easier, and it looks clean and simple

WOW!
Never oc a cpu using software, bios is the only way to make sure it's been done properly.
These new Phenoms over clock pretty well, i see alot of 4ghz overclocks but if you want a nice easy overclock then 3.6 sounds about right.

nonono, the amd cpu comes with it, its not 3rd party or anything. There is a video on youtube, the world record overclock of an x3 720BE, and they use this software from amd and get around 6GHz (dry ice or something expensive obviosly), this software works, its not 3rd party

I just looked at some videos and it looks good but imo you can never beat the bios.
To get the chip to 3.4 ghz is easy, set your CPU voltage to 1.35v (stock) and set the multiplier to 17.
Yay, your first overclock. Your CPU is now running at 3.4 GHz.
If you do this and you can't boot into windows don't worry it's not broken all you have to do is reset the CMOS, there should be a little button on your board which says "CMOS" or "RESET" just push that.

no. I know AMD Overdrive (name of program you are thinking of) is more stable than some previous ones (clockgen, setFSB, the awful nTune from nvidia) but the point is this:
Adjusting FSB when windows is loaded DOES NOT WORK well.
Adjusting multi when windows is loaded WORKS well.
For example speedstep/coolnquiet uses multi not FSB. Even though changing the FSB instead would yield far higher energy saving results (coolnquiet & speedstep are all about energy saving)
Anyway, back to OP. Any PII quad chip runs out at about 3.5 - 3.8GHz regardless of model no. Over 3.5GHz tends to need a vcore bump (i know it's only 1 thing, but it does double the amount of things you need to do in order to OC :p)
Thanks for the Adivce guys, i'll look into it more when my parts arrive in the post. Hoping it will be sometime this week but as 2 of the items i ordered were Order-Upon-Request im not hopeful that it will be delivered this week. :(
Also thanks for that link, most of it was over my head but i'll sit and read it in more detail when my new rig is up and running.

Don't worry if it went over you're head. Once you've got all the bits and are noseing aroun dthe BIOS all this FSB, CPU multi, vCore, etc etc all makes a lot more sense.

Oh goody, thats a relief. I just dont want to start OC'ing my PC and break it cos i didnt have alot of experience in OC'ing.

Ok, so maybe a combination of overdrive and bios will work well, just saying its not a bad app as most are
