Laptop gone bust

Hi there, my laptop has gone bust, kept getting stuck on start up, so I wiped it, reinstalled windows and now it jams on a black screen with cursor on it. So I have bought a new hard drive, and installed windows vista again, and now stuck on the same black screen. Any help would be good, as guess it isn't my hard drive which is corrupted as I thought.

Have you tried booting into safe mode? At what point during startup do you get the the black screen? After the login screen or after the windos logo?

OK, so when booting in safe mode it gets as far as loading the crcdisk.sys then stops and in other mode I make it as far as the loading screen (green bars) and it just stays on that for ever. I reach the black screen with cursor when I do a fresh install of vista and it is booting for the first time.
