Hello All,

I hope you can help, I've not had much luck looking anywhere else on the net for a solution to this problem.

The Problem

I have a problem when I try to import into itunes or rip tracks from CDs.

The import appears to start properly, then around 30% of the way through track 1 my cd drive goes crazy and iTunes skips to the next track and then through all the rest of the tracks on the cd.

The songs do end up in the library but they all have a length of 789:53:12 and won't play.

Similarly when trying to play a CD iTunes plays the first 50ish seconds of track 1 then skips to track 2 and plays around 6 seconds and then skips through them all again.

The same occurs when i try to rip using any other software, have tried jRipper and Windows media player.

The drive I have is LG 22X DVD+/-RW DUAL LAYER DVD-RAM SATA BLACK - OEM/

Has anyone experienced a problem like this before?

Im on Vista Home Premium 32bit. With fully upto date drivers and software.

edit* I should point out that the drive usually reads just fine, I can play games from it with no issue at all.

Thanks in advance

Afty

Hi Afty

Have you tried different media types? I.e. Verbatic, TDK, etc? Sometimes drives do not like certain brands of disc (mostly down to the dye used on the disc). This can sometimes be overcome by flashing a new firmware to the drive - but be cautious as flashing the wrong firmware, doing so incorrectly, or interrupting such a procedure can render the drive permantently inoperable. You must always ensure that you examine the make & model number of the drive carefully. If you are not sure then do not do this as it is done at your own risk.

Of course, the drive may well be faulty.

Thanks Mike,

I'm at work now, but i'll have a more thorough test with different CD's when I get home tonight.

Appreciate the response!

strangely, I have seen this one before. In my case it was faulty IDE cable on a drive, so it may be worth checking with a different SATA cable and/or a different SATA port on your motherboard.

That is definately worth a try, thanks DT I'll give that a ... whirl ... tonight :)

It sucks knowing nothing about hardware :P

Try different media, but if it doesn't work - buy a new drive. They are cheap enough, and life is too short to continually face such aggro...

if your ripping original cd's and these cd's won't play correctly either i would say try the new cable and new sata port

if you have a gigabyte motherboard dont use the purple sata ports

if that dont work flash the firmware with latest version
other than that i would buy a new one
