Hi there..

I'm hoping to build a new PC soon, but am also trying to keep the cost down a little..

I've decided on an Asus P5B-E board (or possibly its wireless bigger brother), with an E660 Core2.

What I'm finding puzzling is what memory to get. I've never really been one for "branded" memory, and I find the costs for Corsair etc quite scary when compared to Novatech's own brand.

I'm also wondering what type do I get - PC5300? PC6400? Am I likely to see any significant increase between the two? Assuming, of course, that the board supports PC6400?

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... RAM-80/1GB (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?RAM-80/1GB) seems to be what I was hoping to go for - 2 of, so as to give a pair of 1Gb leaving me breathing room for future expansion..

I'm not particularly wanting to spark off a "xx make of RAM is better" argument, more hoping someone will say whether I'd be better going for the PC6400 stuff, as the price difference is fairly small.

Cheers,
Gerard

depends on a few things, such as if you are going to overclock, and by how much. Buying non-branded memory will also probably be fine for today, but in a few years you may find you are stuck with sticks that aren't compatible with the system you want to put them in (just happened with a shuttle I built) also a lot of branded now has a lifetime warranty, something else to consider.

i've just built 3 systems for friends, (in december) in each I put the £193 corsair 6400 stuff (2x1GB pack), its not bad, if you wanted a recommendation.
