View Full Version : Linksys NSLU2 NAS
Has anyone got the NSLU2 [LIN-NSLU2] and installed a USB HDD using it? My particular question is, does it format the HDD and use its own encoding, or does it read/write in an NTFS format, thus enabling me to plug my USB HDD into another machine and it work fine. (As an example, i know that the Netgear [NGR-SC101] does reformat the HDD and it cannot be plugged into another pc, be that via USB or IDE)
i looked into these a while back - i'm pretty sure they reformat the drive but don't own one myself. I'm also 99.9% sure they run linux (from memory) so ntfs is pretty unlikely!

I have one of these now :)
It does reformat the disk, and its not ntfs. That said, i read about an unnoficial firmware update that would allow you to use ntfs format on it, which i assume would let you move it around.

It does reformat the disk - as ext3, a linux filesystem (as the NLSU2 is basically a Linux box). The latest Linksys firmware upgrade r2.3r63 is supposed to let you use NTFS on port 1 and FAT on port 2. I tried this and had nothing but problems. So I've gone back to using 'native' ext3 on the disks on both ports. You can get freeware drivers that let you read ext2/3 from a windows machine and you can replace the Linksys firmware with more open linux installs such as Unslung which let you install other software such as ftp servers, enable telnet and other goodies such as music serving.
... if I get the time.. I might try this...
There are reports that it doesn't like Freecom disks and that > 250 Gb is not supported but I have 2 x 500 Gb Freecom discs working fine, maybe the problems were with NTFS :?:
ftp server in the latest official bios works fine

Does anyone know if Slim Devices SlimServer (http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_features.html) can be installed on this?

Just found the answer to my question - yes. Here's how. (http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Applications/SlimServer)
