View Full Version : Problems with seeing new NovaTech2g MP3 player on XP machine
Latest batch of 2G MP3 player is not correctly seen by 2 of the 5 computers on which we have tried it - all are running XP SP2 with updates. The 2 on which it does not work are perhaps a bit older than the others (3 yrs cf 1.5)
MP3 appears in the device list, but not on MyComputer, except briefly when it is disconnected. A previous batch 2G MP3 player (with the horrible panda for 'Goodbye') works fine.
Help please

does windows make the dong-ding noise when you plug it in?
does the problem pcs have issues with other usb devices?
you might want to reset your usb stack. This means booting xp into safe mode, and delete any items from usb device list in device manager,
http://www.usbman.com tells you how to do this.

SGC, I'd advise to do what asteriod said. Then check to see if any other device works in the usb ports.
Check to see if it's USB1 or USB2 ports (speed difference). Then plug your unit in and post results here. I'll see if I can help further.
Thanks asteroid and G-Man BUT
1) went to USBMAN and followed instructions, XP didn't offer a 'Remove' option so I chose 'Uninstall' - a bit scary when computer rebooted and went through all the USB devices, taking a long time to find the mouse AND seemed to load an extra USB 'device' in the Device list than before (no the MP3 was not connected)
2) checked that USB printer worked YES
3) plugged in new MP3 - It appeared in the device list under disk drives as disk drive and initially said it did not have a driver, and then it appeared BUT it did not work.
4)plugged in old MP3 and this is fine.
5) When new MP3 plugged in it does ding dong, and when unplugged it dong dings, and appears briefly as a disk in MyComputer - the computer seems to be preoccupied with reading it as it slows down (and READING appears on MP3 screen)
6)I believe all my USB ports are 2.0 (how can I check this?) In any case shouldn't this only slow down the data exchange? (or does it have additional functionality?)
7)The two machines on which new MP3 does not work are Evesham desk which came with XP and to which SP2 has been added. The one we have on which it does work is a Dell laptop which came with SP2 already in - is this of relevance (shouldn't be but...)?
I await other things to check/try
TIA

Hi
The problem you describe is exactly what is happening on my Dell laptop- unable to see USB drive in explorer but all looks OK in deviece manager - tried various uninstals/ reinstall of drivers still same problem -
drive appears breifly after un- plugging .
DID you get a resolution to this - is if Faulty hardware ?
here's hoping :(
Martin,
No, no resolution yet (no one has come back to me with any other suggestions).
Don't think it is faulty HW as it is seen by 3 out of 5 computers tried.
Our Dell laptop works, it is <2yrs old; how old is your Dell?
I suspect it is a driver update problem somewhere, perhpas related to how XP is installed. It is a real pain not being able to access it on the Evesham machine.
Cheers

the bad dell is a latitide about 2yrs old running XP pro. It does seem to be a PC issue as it player works on new ( only 2months old) inspiron running XP home edition.
so main difference is XP professional vs XP home edition .
It is very annoying as all my music is on the laptop that it does not work with
Thnaks for reply anyway.
Martin,
It's not XP Pro vs Home Edition as all 3 of our computers are XP Home.
The working Dell is also an Inspiron.
Can anyone else help please
