View Full Version : High Temps with a Q6600, What's up?

hello

I am running a Q6600 on an asus P5n32sli plus motherboard. I'm cooling it with an arctic freezer 7 pro but even running at normal bios settings with no overclock, core temp reads very high.

Right now, Core 0 and 1 are at 48c and core 2 and 3 are at 42c.

Using the Orthos stress test, core 0 and 1 go up to 69c

Is this normal or too hot.

What could the problem be?

Please advise

Evening, this does seem odd as I have personally ran a q6600 at 3ghz in a media centre on that board and the cores have never exceeded 35c.

Is the cpu sink mounted correctly? Have you checked that the voltage supplied to the cpu is correct?

Andy

Those temps are a bit high, considering no OC. It can be caused by a few things:

-Case airflow. What case do you have and is there good airflow through it?
-Bad heatsink contact. Re-seat the heatsink (cpu cooler). I'd also re-apply Thermal paste.
-Improper application of thermal grease. You might have put too much or too little, or isn't making a good enough contact. Take off cpu cooler, re-apply grease and re-seat heatsink. (Same as above really).
-Too high voltage going to cpu (Vcore). This is improbable if you haven't touched the BIOS. But you can download cpu-z to find out what it is.

What speed are you running it at? HOw much voltage are you cramming into it to get it that high?
Does your case have a good airflow through it?

For a 3.0ghz oc yeas, thats high.

I'm gonna look at remounting now, the voltage is at 1.275 so thats standard i think.
I'll let you know how the remounting goes...

I hope it's something as little as that..

1.275 is standard I'd have though. Mine has a VID of 1.3v. Check Coretemp and VID. It'll probably say 1.275. VID is what voltage the board will automatically give the chip in order to run at stock speed.

Ok, finished remounting, but still very very hot, just booted up and I have 52c on cores 1 and 2.

Standard voltage at 1.275, no overclocking.

Can't make any sense of it

52 Degrees on load?

idle....

Load would be good, but i daren't try it..

Full system specs and thermal paste used?

When I used a vapochill lightspeed with this mobo and cpu, i was told to completly cover the pins with thermal grease, to get the best seal and not have any air in the seal. I cleaned up the CPU as best i could, wiped off the thermal grease but couldn't touch the grease left on the pins. This time i tried with hardly any thermal grease between the CPU and cooler, but i'm getting the same results.
May need to order a different heatsink, any advice? It couldn't be the heatsink could it?

BTW

When I was using the lightspeed I was achieving expected temps (-15 etc) and it's only now that I've noticed the increase, ever since I started using the Arctic freezer pro

You put thermal paste on the motherboard socket pins?

teamnoodle

yeah, for phase cooling you should apparently. The system was fine for at least a year running at -15c and everything was ok, it's only when I stopped using the Vapochill that I am getting these high temps

im LOLing so hard right now

Why? It's in most guides on installation, even in the user manual.

in the bios what the fan speed ?

could be Q fan settings would have a look at them myself

CPU Fan speed is between 2647-2667 rpm

Using Nvidia control panel, the CPU temp shows 39C so that's a good sign, but core temp still shows it to be 52-54 depending on which core.

wasn't Loling at what you said dude was loling at the reaction. i think Aaron thought you was saying you put thermal paste on the push pins of the cooler your using

you was talking about having to cover whole the cpu socket with paste right ?

if that fan is seated correctly doing high speeds as that the really low temps you had could have damaged the sensors

try realtemp then

Sniperdude, you had me paranoid for a sec. lol

it's weird how core temp and nvidia monitor show such a big difference in temps, a difference of around 14 degrees.

running a sensor test now on realtemp and prime 95, however real temp and core temp are showing the same figures : 78 75 69 66
Nvidia monitor is showing 62c

mate i would give prime a miss for now if it is that hot

if the heat sink is on right ( i would check again each pin them push pins are a pain) the sensors could be damaged

I've got a very similar problem here with a Q6700 using an Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro.

As an experiment I just put my old Intel cooler on the Q6700 and the temperatures are a degree or 2 lower than with the AF7. On close examination using a straight edge metal ruler I found the contact area of the AF7 to be nowhere near flat with high spots along the outer edges with the centre of the contact area a good 1mm lower.

I guess it needs lapping but with the mounting clips it makes it near impossible so I think I'll be getting a better heatshink.
