ok prob ought to put on this a Linux form I guess..

how come on my system which dual boots XP and Ubuntu, I can into either, but Ubuntu will not open the 120gb drive with XP (and all my MP3s and photos) Does Linux not natively read NTFS partitions and require a 3rd party app to do this or something?

Various people that have some Linux experience tells me it should just work, but Im not sure why it cant here?

not entirely sure about ubuntu, but with fedora (so i'll assume its the same) you need to install ntfs support then mount the drive - however its a very very bad idea as its not hmmm, stable, and has been known to trash your ntfs partition.

and yes, you are probably better off asking in a linus forum! have you been to linuxquestions.org yet?

Not alot come with being able to read ntfs, oh and you'll probably find you can only "read" if you want to write to ntfs however, you need to pay microsoft for the rights I believe.

I've had no problems reading NTFS files in Ubuntu, but have had it installed for a while, so may have updated a few bits and pieces :? .

may be worth doing an $ fdisk -l to see what ubuntu is calling the partition, and then try mounting it. see what messages, if any, it gives you.

Ubuntu normally has everything a "windows" user will use. Its basically the linux version for dummies

In the synaptic package manager search for ntfs.

On my system the drivers are install, if they are not on yours try installing them.

I have no problems reading the ntfs partition but have a fat partition for shared files.

Not sure if this is the same problem, but mine will not boot ubuntu, if i use wubi it installs, boots and then tells me there are no block devices found.

Also the cd version will not work either.

System is running xp and ubuntu on a dual boot.

Worked for me...

In some versions of Ubuntu, I've had to mount the drives to see them. Just a menu item, I think.
