Im new to all this so not too sure what Im doing tbh.

I want to overclock my processor. I have a AMD 3400+ Newcastle chip with a ThemalTake A1838 K8-Silent Boost fan helping to keep it cool but i want it to run faster.

I have 1.5gb of PC27300 ram and an MSI K8N Neo Platinum mobo running off a Jeantech 680w (I think) PSU.

Any ideas/tips/suggestions would be much appreciated.

keep cool and quiet off
get some better RAM eg.pc3200 or pc3500 RAM

keep and yey on the temps while doing it

voids all warranties

think tax means keep an eye on it. use motherboard monitor to view temps. raise fsb gradually as well.

or use a program called "core temp"
make sure you read up on overclocking before you try it
alot of people jump into it without doing their homework and break their cpu's

like me :S the only overclocking i've done is on amd 3500+ using AI NOS. lol. it's really rather simple though.

AI NOS is a terrible overclocking tool
doesnt adjust anything apart from the FSB, doesnt adjust the cpu/ram divider or anything like that

Best way is from the BIOS. (and use software to monitor temps and speed) It's also the simplest. Some (or most) even perform the overclock for you by adjusting in increments. 3%, 5% and 10% for example. This is also the best advice if you do it manually.

Adjust in increments and test for stability - run a powerful program or game and see how it holds up under load.

e.g - I have a AMD 64 3200 (754) that runs at 2.21Ghz standard and got it all the way up to 2.43Ghz (2.50 was too unstable).

So try it yourself and see what works as no CPU overclocks the same.

i had a AMD 754pin 3000+ @2ghz, and i got it stable at 2.7ghz, but i only had an AGP slot on my board, so i thought i would upgrade the whole thing :D

Is this normal then? Sorry, dont know much about CPU's :(

temps are a bit high for you to do any overclocking
if you get the temps lower, then you could overclock

go into the bios and try and change the cpu Vcore to something lower, 1.55v is far too high, maybe 1.4v

Ok cool, have dropped the CPU voltage down to 1.4 and the chip is now running between 48/49 dec. Im presuming that is still too high?

it is still quite high
try dropping it another notch down
you using stock heatsink and fan??
and what other cooling do you have in your case??

Im using a ThemalTake A1838 K8-Silent Boost fan on the chip and I have a ThermalTake Xaser3 case with all 7 of the case fans running.

What does chaging the voltage of the chip actually do? Does it affect it performance wise?

more voltage going through the cpu, the higher the temperature will be
