If you have recently purchased a new motherboard bundle or barebones and are bringing across your old hard drive, you might find errors occuring on your first boot up. If you get Blue screen errors or Windows simply doesnt appear to behave, there is a good reason.

Windows logs the CHIPSET and drivers of the motherboard it was installed on and after that it doesn't automatically realign to the specifications of the new setup. If you have troubles, you may be forced to reinstall Windows from scratch.

If you have data you need off the drive, Novatech recommend using an external hard drive enclosure that will allow you to connect the hard drive to another machine and rescue your data, after which you can reinstall Windows.

Quite often you will find by uninstalling all of the drivers for the chipset and gpu, you can use your old install but I would always personally do a fresh install with a new mobo.

FWIW, in my experience XP Pro will usually sort out the drivers for you when changing motherboards.

OEM XP Home will just refuse to play nicely, as mentioned. I don't know if full retail versions are better.
