Hi

For the past week my pc has been playing up one problem i have is that at random times the pc will just cut off ie black screen and im forced to reboot. Then today the same happened but when i rebooted the system i notised the CPU speed was incorrect so i rebooted again then the CPU reading was right?

What could be the problem here
Ram?
CPU?
Motherboard?

I am running XP Pro
Amd 3000+
MSI Motherboard
MSI 6600GT
1 GB RAM

Thanks all

what do you mean the cpu speed changed? i doubt the ram is to fault...

At a guess I'd say the either the RAM on GFX card is faulty or your PSU is dieing. Does it happen when you doing anything in particular? e.g. playing 3d games.

As Teknokid said. Unsure how what you mean by CPU speed is incorrect. Unless you playing with settings in the BIOS. Where is it showing this info?
But I don't think this is anything to worry about.

If you are able, swap the GFX card with another. Or try putting you card in another machine. See if you get any similar problems.

What i mean is that during POST the CPU shows up as 1GHZ it should be 2.09GHZ. And it doesnt happen during gameplay mostly when i am on the net. Today it rebooted and the screen was full of purple lines/dots all over the screen now its ok again. :?

The CPU tells the mb Bios what speed it is, and most mb's then automaticly show this. Some bios's don't do this however, so they show the default settings for a cpu. Fo example the cpu might be a 133fsb but the bios default is 100 so it shows a lesser cpu speed on boot.

A cmos battery on the way out, or just a faulty mb, can cause bios's to switch between settings so this might be whats causing your random cpu speed changes. It could also be a faulty cpu.

A multicoloured screen can be caused by overheating and/or driver issues on the gfx and other components.

Wouldnt the time/date be going out of sync if the battery was on the way out. My computer is about 3-4 years old and i use the same drivers all the time so i dont think its a driver issues on the gfx
Its only been happening the last week. I dont think its overheating aswell my PSU is blowing cold air out and even the case isnt all that hot

How often do you give it a clean out?

Your GFX card has is own fan and heatsink = a dust magnet = overheating.

Get hold of a can of compressed air and a hoover. Use the air dust off all of your components and hoover out the parts in the case away from the electronic parts. Fan inlets and outlets etc. This maybe enough to solve you graphical problems.

The lines and dots defintely point to overhearting and / or faulty RAM on graphics card. The only program I know of that can test Graphics RAM is called PCCheck. But I have no idea where you could get a copy.

Thanks for your help i will clear dust from the heatsink btw my temps for gfx is 55c and i have a zalman fan on it

well, on there you can see that there is some sort of problem with the RAM

do the usual, try with 1 stick, then try with just the other stick
then use RAM that works in another machine
test your RAM in another machine that is functioning properly
reset cmos

Ben

Your RAM is clearly faulty from those pics.

You don't need to mess around with swapping your RAM and testing it. PC check is good enough to check it in situ. (I know because I use it almost daily at work).

Unfortunately looks like you need to replace it.

:(

I just noticed too that your Hard Drive has failed it's SMART test. :(

This isn't good. I'd suggest going to your drive manufacturer's website and downloading their proprietary tools to confirm. But looks like you need a new one too. :(

Ruud

Ben what is the smart test for the hard drive?

Taxation
19-01-2007, 12:35 PM
its kind of like a built in checking device for the hard drive
can display temps on some drives and some other stuff too

Ben
19-01-2007, 12:37 PM
Basically it a built in self test for the Hard drive

From Wikipedia

Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology, or S.M.A.R.T., is a monitoring system for computer hard disks to detect and report on various indicators of reliability, in the hope of anticipating failures.
