I recently got a new Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 and Novatech 7900GS graphics card and once installed my old PSU blew up on me, it was around 2-3 years old and powered at 500 watts.
I'm now concerned that 550 watts isnt going to be enough to power these, would it be worth my while buying a 600 watt PSU? http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... psu600&P=4 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?nov-psu600&P=4)

i wouldnt get that one. its worth spending atleast £45 on a good psu as it will last longer! i'd go for a hiper type-r 580w there great value!

generally the more you spend the higher the quality the longer it should last. and many people from the forum have purchased, and been very happy with the hiper psu's.

That 580 watt one you mention, I presume that comes with the 24 pin connection and 12 v connection as well as the standard power connectors.
Just the specs on the page doesnt say much.

if you dont want to spend as much money you could go for a hiper type m 530w i have a slightly more powerful system with a x1950 pro and 6300 and it runs fine

Cool, thats all I need to hear really. Just think I'll steer clear of the cheapo PSU's now I've learnt my lesson and try out this hyper PSU.
Cheers for the input guys.

Try and get one with 120mm fan in, keeps heat down. Spending more money will get you better quality and longer life

my type R 580W has a 120mm intake inside the case, and a smaller fan exhausting the hot air out the back

I need to replace an 'old' Aopen PSU. Its a second/standby PC, 1.5gh AMD, 1GB with 5 (small) HDD's, graphics, sound and wireless card The current PSU just can't cope, means unplugging USB bits on startup, so I am looking at something in the region of 500+ watts. I would like something reasonably quite and therefore guess a PSU with 1 120mm fan. Question is How can I be sure that the PSU's fan will also help with case cooling? There are a number of small 80mm case fans left over from overclocking which I also intend replacing but I don't want too many. If the PSU fan would cope with keeping the case cool would I need any case fans? Its a full tower case. I have read somewhere that in order to keep PSU's running quite the PSU's fan speed is regulated but only to keep the temperature of the PSU within specification which could be as high as 70C.
What's the Hiper line like?
Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Bit late getting back. Bearing in mind a major requirement is to keep things quite, the last 'review' on the Novatec product site of the Hiper puts me right off. My main PC has a QTechnology Ultra-Quiet ATX PSU 560W, 120mm dustproof fan which meets power and noise requirements. I was hoping to save a few pounds on the second PC but you can't win um all.
