is it possible to add an app on people's profiles to display their total active time on the forum? just so we can see how much time we are wasting away on here :D lol
thats the most scary thing i've ever heard!

I'm another "would rather not know". I'm curious as to how it might be done though. Nobody's truely logged in and things like showing who is online are a bit of a fiddle.

It can be done two ways...
Page script that has a timer from page loading and runnning the script gets posted along with the next request which is updated on the Database.
The time period that the socket for the page is left at a state of WAIT which is pretty poor because the connection generally times out after a period unless the headers passed have been to not close the connection [IE: Connection: Keep-Alive].
I know some other bits of Forum software count the time you've been logged in etc... I think the last one I remember is SMF Forums or PHPBB.
As for showing when a user is online... what ususally happens is if the sessions are logged in the databases for access anyway, if they're time stamped and the user hasn't requested a page for over 20 mins it can be classed as "Offline"..
Hope that helps :)

impossible to do it accurately but should be fairly trivial to estimate, just need to define a timeout period.

Different forum time comment: I notice the time here is getting faster - about 5 minutes ahead of my (set via NTP) PC.
