Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) errors can link to a fault or malconfiguration almost anywhere on the system. A good place to start is with memory (RAM) (http://forum.novatech.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=32) and hard drive (HDD) (http://forum.novatech.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=33) diagnostic utilities.

Prime95 (http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm) (download) (http://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v2414.exe) can be used to strain the system in between changes you have made to test stability.

Motherboard, PSU, CPU, RAM, heat problems, software and drivers can all be the cause.

Can you please provide information on the blue screen of death if you system does not restart itself like some tend to do.

STOP CODE or Error information would be helpful as this may help point us in the right direction as to what caused it.

Please provide the model number of the PC you have. The BIOS version you are currently running and any information you have with reference to the BSOD such as STOP ERROR Code, Error Message and anything else that might be useful such as does it only happen when certain applications are running.

We should then be able to start looking in to the problem.

Can you provide some info on what you were doing with your system between switching it on and the BSOD.

Also can you provide BIOS version your running on your mainboard.
Are you also running the latest Video, Audio and Chipset Drivers for your system.

This could be a RAM issue but OCZ tends to be quite stable but it might be worth running something like memtest86 just as a guide to see how it reacts. Are you using 1GB stick or 2 x 512mb???

Nitram

If you are getting both 8e and 50 stop codes, it could be related to a recent virus incident from late last year. Don't panic it might not be that but we have to accept that pattern matches microsoft incident report.

Please read the following microsoft support article and see if this fits in with your error situation

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903251/en-us

It may not be this but i like to cover all possibilities. You may also want to consider running some diagnostics to see if it could just be hardware. Most likely is the ram. If you have 2 sticks you can try removing one for a while to see if issue goes away and swap sticks or try some memory software like memtest86 to see what reaction it gives.

Was your system working fine before and then started to have problems with BSOD or has it always been this way??

Ok sorry i forgot to say that i did get a virus in the MBR. I solved this by re writing the MBR and all seemed fine. As for memtest iv run that and all is fine with all 4 256mg sticks. Im living with it at this time but think i may have to buy a new MB. Im off on holiday in may so i may upgrade to 64bit on my return so no biggy but it would be nice to find out whats going off as ill need to resell this MB and CPU.

if you want to check for hardware problems have a look at http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ there is software on here for checking the hard drive, cpu, memory and a burn in test. if you try running these if there is a hardware problem one of the tests should pick up the problem. if all the tests come back ok as you are running them out of windows i would put the problems down to software.

Coops - thanks for the reply.

Below are a few screen shots of my system spec.

Sorry, I have a few systems running (2 of them are the ANTEC P160 case's and are similar specs - apart from this one (which had the BSOD has 512mb (x2 256mb dual) RAM and an NVIDIA FX 5200 128mb (not 6800ULTRA) - I built two similar, one for gaming and the other for general use.

At the time, the system was 'idle', I had MSN Messenger open (which I use vertually everyday, and 'My Documents' folder.

My guess from that is that you have faulty ram. The exception was probably caused by access to the faulty ram. Turn on minidumps and attach them :)

The dumps can be found in %SystemRoot%\Minidump (c:\windows\Minidump)

Coops - Thanks for the quick reply.

Below is a screen shot of my System Spec.

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-1/1129813/Spec.SilverComp2.JPG

I use the drivers that are on the Disk that comes with the mobo/gpu etc. I know you can upgrade for the latest drivers, but I have had the system for over 13 months and found its been fine until the other day when I received that BSOD. Also, its been about 2months since the system had been formatted and a fresh copy of XP installed.

No memory tests have been carried out on the system, what would be the best test to do?

Thanks again,

They are probably already on.

If not...

Right click my computer.
Left click Properties.

Thats out the window then.

This gets stranger by the min. Got another BSOD today and it said run chkdisk on drive F. Drive F is my card reader that had my 128meg card in it so im not sure if windows tried to use it for some strange reason, found out it could not and blue screened.

djgandy

You don't have adminstrator access to your pc then?
Blue screens mean something is not right, or you have a poorly written driver somewhere. The latter is not very likely though.

Windows will probably run chkdsk on all drives to check for corruption. Not being able to access a drive won't cause a BSOD.

Just a quick note on memtest 86. I have a novatech laptop. Which to my dismay was bsoding in windows and kernel panicing (not booting) in linux. I figured it was memory or cpu. i used memtest 86 to confirm my suspicions. Unfortunately it didnt show any errors. I ran it for hours. I sent it back to novatech (who were very helpful and fast) it got returned to me with new memory and hasnt had any problems for a year and a half. now it turns itself off when it overheats. But i think that is just cos it is full of dust.

Ok so that was long and very dull. Point is that if you use memtest and it doesnt show and error that doesnt mean that your memory is ok.

It is true that memtest is not 100% accurate at picking up faults and memory related problems can occur only under heavy load or temperatures. It is the best guide that you can use for self diagnosis.

i'm getting a BSOD too, unfortunately. both in windows x64 and x86 pro. it gives machine_check exception with the stop code 9c, every time. i'm thinking it has something to do with my memory not being fully compatible due to being double sided 16 chip modules at DDR400 which i recently found out that the x2 line has trouble with. i've tried running it at DDR333, and the seemed to help a bit (the error was occuring mainly when i tried to copy a large volume of data from one drive to the other). i managed to copy around 20 gb worth of data as a test, and then left my system idling while i went out. came back and the BSOD was back. =\

EDIT: i've also run memtest86, but no errors after letting it run through all tests twice.
