The ATI Radeon 4890 graphics card is ATI's new single core flagship graphics card. Based on the 4870 architecture this card features a new GPU and much faster GDDR5 memory. Clocking in at 850MHz core speed and 3900MHz out of the box this card is anywhere between 10-15% faster than the previous 4870 graphics card. In our own testing we found these cards to perform extremely well but things start to get really exciting when you use the supplied ATI Overdrive utility within the catalyst drivers. Early rumous have seen cards reaching insane speeds as high as 1000MHz core and 4800MHz memory. In our own testing we found the cards remained stable upto 990MHz core and 4600MHz memory which results in nearly 30% performance improvement over the 4870 cards and performance was incredibly close and sometimes matching GTX 285 performance levels. Now Novatech does not guarantee that these cards will overclock the same for everyone but it seems safe to say cards should happily run at 950MHz core area and 4400MHz memory. Needless to say ATI have a winner on their hands with the 4890 graphics cards.

The SAPPHIRE HD 4890 Vapor-X 1GB model is a SAPPHIRE original design. It has SAPPHIRE?s Vapor-X cooling module on the GPU together with a heatsink and profiled fan venting heat out of the case. With core clock speed of 850MHz and 1GB of DDR5 memory clocked at 975MHz, this model not only has additional memory but is also quieter and significantly faster than competing products based on the standard reference design. The larger memory size and faster speeds deliver higher performance in rendering tasks and increased frame rates in games - especially at high resolutions and where complex textures are used.
Vapor Chamber Technology is based on the same principles as heatpipe technology. A liquid coolant is vaporised at a hot surface, the resulting vapor is condensed at a cold surface then the liquid is returned to the hot surface. The recirculation process is controlled by a patented wick system. SAPPHIRE Vapor-X flattens the whole system into a slim chamber - which in the graphics application is mounted in contact with the surface of the graphics chip.
Choke is an important component of the graphics card. By working with the component engineer, Sapphire?s patent pending choke is 10% cooler and offers 25% more power efficiency than a normal choke. The graphics card will be more reliable and save energy.
Improved reliability and better overclocking are possible by using only high-polymer, aluminum capacitors which posses far superior characteristics than regular aluminum capacitor for a longer product life. When operational temperatures drop by 20 C, the product life span is extended by a factor of ten, when the operational temperature increases by 20 C, the product life span only decreases by 10%.
