I'm half way through my BSc Computer Science and thinking of doing my CCNA this year, might do MCSE, not really bothered at the moment.

I know more through experiance then most people I have met with an MCSE, who know the theory but fall apart on the practical. A computer never does what its supposed to do and we all know that!
If I need to have it for work I'll get it but I won't jump through hoops for it until I need to.

Agreed. MCSE isn't hard. Probably makes MS a good few bucks though!
Same for this Cisco ones too tbh, would learn a lot more on the job with others than a book will ever teach you.
I guess i need the book though since i don't have the job.

Speaking of qualifications what sort of qualifications would someone need if they wanted to go into the IT engineer career or the games designing ( coding and level designing areas)???

Probably IT engineering or games designing/coding qualifications :D Though these days a degree in turnip crunching will probably work...

If you're talking big games with engines like crysis q4 etc You'll need to be a C++ god.

My dads a plumber! nuffin rong with plumbers 2k for a days work if you know what to look for
and there is no way you will walk into an IT job paying 40k, think 15k unless you do a degree, and then you are probably looking at 20-25k until you get some experience under your belt

40K for ya first job
Pffffff, jog on matey
18K max then once you have experience, then you can get more
as for hardware jobs, they preferably need someone who is mature, and drives a car to get there. not many jobs involving building computers (depending on location)
but onsite technicians and technicains which go from site to site is where most people will go, that or customer call centres

biggest misconception people think about IT workers, is that they are on lots of money

i wanna work for vadim (http://www.vadim.co.uk) designing there pc's. they're amazing.
yeah they ain't bad. So what have you done in getting yourself towards computer design? and to make yourself better than someone who has been doing it for 10+ years? thats what you need to think about and figure out how to get there.
Hate to say it, putting a few components together isn't exactly tough these days, to start with its all plug and play, don't have jumpers/memory ranges/irq etc to worry about!
and the easier/more fun something is, the more people want to do it, the less demand, the less you'll be paid.

Thats about right for graduates.
You have to start becoming ORACLE admins etc to get into the 50k zone. The only problem with that is you become the most boring person in the world!
Even some of the C++ jobs on monster don't play a lot, and they require 5+ years experience.
Building PC's, no money to be made there. Anyone can build a pc.

well im doing 2 gcse it corses.... network management looks fairly well payed.
djgandy

The only GCSE's that get you anything are Maths Science and English, and you need them to get into College and a lot of University courses.
Network Management is well paid at a high level, be prepared to have to read some huge books. It's not a case of just plugging some pc's in.
and again, you're looking at 5 years experience...
assuming you can get your head around it all, perfectly, first time, and don't forget a thing...

game developing, you WILL have to relocate for that
and they would want people with 5+ years experience
with a graduate degree
and C++

yh :p convert the loft into a rad.
JDowdall
06-02-2007, 09:34 PM
actually that could be one way of heating your house by plugging lyk 5 heavily oc'd computers into your water and using that to heat your water, and then fit the roof with solar panel's to compensate for the huuuuge power demands. I THEREFORE PATENT THIS IDEA!
teknokid
06-02-2007, 09:46 PM

A lot of games are actually made in the UK ;)
I'd tell you where i read it, but i can't find the link :p
We're second to America though as far as I remember.
My wife was telling me that and Portsmouth is one of the leading areas... apparently - can't see it myself though. She does get a lots of odd info though being a teacher.

Portsmouth is definately *not* one of the best places for games development jobs. There is only one major games studio in Portsmouth, Climax group who are based at Gunwharf.
Mostly the spread of games studios is pretty thin over the whole country, but you can find clusters... In Guildford for example you can find studios like Lionhead, Criterion & Blitz all within a stones throw of eachother. Also you have Codemasters, Rare, BigBig, Freestyle all located in or around Leamington Spa - Warwickshire.. And of course there's a boat load in central London.
Climax group
I won't Google that one at work !!
