Can someone confirm the situation about buying a Upgrade edition of Vista.
I read that it is NOT possible to do a CLEAN install using the Upgrade edition (ie boot from the DVD and install to a clean PC hard disk). Is this true?

That is correct. You need either Windows 2000 or Windows XP both activated and validated.

Best advice is to buy the OEM version and avoid the upgrades! They're about half the price of the upgrades for some reason :?

Which is odd as the microsoft help site only lists XP (or 2003 I think it was) as a valid upgradeable product. But yes, i've read it will upgrade off a 2k installation too.

Microsoft will not provide support to people with oem versions. I want a full retail I can switch around from x to y without instalation woes, without support.
