+1 Although when you install Vista, you can elect to keep the existing file format and it will pop all your old windows stuff in a folder called "Windows.old" you can access you old program files and docs ect from within there. Thats the lazy way I always do and will be doing so when I get my nw Mobo and free copy of Windows 7 Ultmate.

It's not as simple as just "Uninstalling XP". To get rid of XP, you need to either
a) dual boot with another HDD keeping bother operating systems and the files they already had
b) Install Vista over XP so that the XP Files are in a folder called "Windows Old". Bear in mind that apps that were installed will not work, just your files.
c) Backup Files, Format hard drive and then do a clean install. Once it's installed copy over your files from where you have backed them up.
Go with C Tbh.

Remember you can't backup unisntalled apps, so you will have to reinstall them.

Yes, you can't back them up. They need to be re-installed.
