hello hello, my friend is really getting into making music on his computer - mixing songs, sounds, layering, electro funk and all that! the thing is, he was going on about getting a mac cos he has heard that the music software on there is brilliant - however, i would like to save him money and told him about linux, open source stuff etc. but i dont know how any of their music making programs compare to mac's programs. anyone used open source music programs? better - or same level - as macs? thank you!!!!

I don't (my ignorance) really understand what you are asking but...

I've used RoseGarden (http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/) on the odd occasion where I've wanted to sequence a MIDI. I haven't found it as easy as an old version of Cakewalk I used to have on Windows but it does the job.

For recording and I'd think going beyond Audacity, I'd guess Ardour2 might be worth a look: http://ardour.org/

I'll put another vote in for Ardour - It's a decent feature rich DAW, considering it's free!

Audacity?
I despise it because our school is obsessed with it.. doesn't stop it being half decent though
