I found an auto overclock utility in my Asus mobo bios and decided to run it.

To my suprise it clocked to

3.62 ghz which Im very happy with.

The temps are also very good (in my rather unknowlegable opinion) considering Im using a stock cooler

Core temp is showing (as Im typing) 42, 42, 44, 39

Im very happy

HOWEVER,

Im toying with changing the stock cooler to a Corsair Hydro H50 (was thinking about air but Skt 1156 coolers are a bit thin on the ground)

Is it likely I would get a higher overclock or am I hoping for too much and should just be satisfied with with the 3.62 that I have?

Thanks

What are your load temps? If there still good then you have room temp wise left in your cooler now. The H50 will allow you to clock to 4.2Ghz if your chip and mobo are good enough.

I have run a stress test program (Prime 95?) yet.

The highest temp on the XTC benchmark was 70deg C

Run Linx. 20 times with all your RAM used will give you max temps and will let you know if its stable or not. Expect temps to be alot higher than that XTC bench so watch them closely.

I downloaded Prime95 earlier

When I ran it the temps ran skyward at a rapid rate and after 2 minutes I stopped it as the temps wnet over 90 deg C

I then put the clocks back to standard and ran Prime again and it sailed merrily along at 65 deg C for 5 minutes and then I turned it off.

I guess Im going to need to replace my stock cooler so I'll probably pop down to NT this week and get an H50 - I'll be sure to post the results when its fitted

Ive left the machine unclocked for now

You will probably find that the auto-overclock feature is putting FAR too much voltage on your cpu...it probably doesn't need half as much

I used an autoclocking system that was in the Asus Bios for the overclock, but I took a screen shot of Turbo Evo which I believe showed the settings that were in the Bios.

I dont know if 1.42 volts is higher than what would be required from a manual overclock.

Oh, you can also see the temp that the cores reached when I had run P95 - core 4 reached a toasty 97 degrees. What would have happened if I hadnt shut P95 down? Would the machine have crashed or rebooted or what?

Strange might be a bugged sensor, should really be shutting itself down in the late 90's ( ie rebooting itself)
Your max load temp should be about 70-80 any more & I personally wouldnt advise it

I was hoping it would shut down as well - the reason it got so high was I didnt know how to turn off P95.

I initially just tried clicking the close window X when the temperature was in the high 80's and it took a few seconds to realise it had only minimised to the tray and which point I stopped it correctly.

Ive been running it at stock speeds at the mo' which is fine as it runs everything I want it to easily. Once I get decent cooling installed I'll crank it back up.
