I am running Windows 7 on a PIII-850 laptop with 384mb of RAM, and whilst it is not speedy, it is managing it very well indeed - much better than XP.

I would say 2gb is enough for windows7....however, if you are moving to w7 to take advantage of DX10/11 - that implies you are wanting to play the latest games, in which case 2gb will probably not be enough to see benefit.

yes but would it be worse than xp ? i mean would games performance slow down ? as you see above it says its not wise to use xp with dual cores processors

You are making this more difficult than it is really. Some old games had issues with multi-core CPUs, but things have moved on. We have seen 4GB of memory help mainstream games a bit, and that is particularly true of Vista which has a large operating system footprint. Windows 7 and XP usually run very sweetly on 2GB, but more is always better. In fact some enthusiast modified games need 4GB at least for high texture levels and large maps.

i will get 4 gb but the time isnt right yet . meanwhile i wanted to see if its a good idea to move to windows 7 and dx10 or not . based on my current 2 gb of Kingston ram , i knew it wasnt a good idea for vista but i didnt know haw windows 7 will be ... am dont feel good about using old os while i have good hardware that can move things ahead for me .. in fact am having lots of bugs with new programs with the good old win xp ... ill try windows 7 32 bit then . should home premium be better for my limited ram ?

Windows 7 Home Basic looks so cut down, that it will disappoint I reckon.

I plan on using Windows 7 Premium and 64 bit since I can cope with my ancient and obscure TV Tuner having issues, which is the only problem area I can think of.

You were extremely unlucky with that Corsair DHX5 issue, but this time I think you should say to yourself "I can cope with anything that crops up!"

I'd look around for another Kingston 2GB stick. You can usually mix memory speeds without problems so a KVR DDR2-800 ought not to be troublesome.

yes unlucky that one of those such high quality chips wasnt working .. it wasnt even the timing or voltage issues but the worse thing is that we didnt know what was the error and i feared the worse .. the build was a success there was many other more important cards that worked am not so sad about a ram stick .. if i want to get 4 gb now i can but am just kinda lazy .. i want to get the 2 gb corsair chip that is working and give them back thier Kingston stick .. if everything worked well with it i wont be assed to get 4 gb soon , i might do it after 2 years when i will upgrade my vga again anyway are you recommending home premium ? i wasnt talking about basic

Yep, Home premium is more than enough for most people, including myself

I ran Windows XP SP 2 on a Dual Core AMD 4200+, Geil 2GB 800MHz [OC'd to 900-920MHz] and an XFX Nvidia GTS 8800 560M 320MB Overclocked to 2.6GHz Core on the CPU and GPU Core 600 / GPU Memory 950.

Performed exactly as the reviews said out of the box and even better overclocked. I have no idea where this idea comes from that the performance is inhibbited on that age of hardware...

Back to the actual question at hand...

My experience so far with Windows 7100 x64 (RC 1) is that I am glad of having 4GB of RAM. It's often the case that I need about 2GB for a game, some voice software and some other stuff in the background.

Applications and programming languages are becomes more and more bloated in my honest opinion on the basis that as more compute, RAM etc becomes available things can be come a little more wasteful without huge problems with application performance.
