Hi, I have a new motherboard/ cpu bundle on route from Novatech for the mother in law. I understand that Windows wont like it after fitting everything and booting the machine. I have heard that Microsoft can help out, especially in cases like these, where the hardware change was due to a system failure. The pc originally only came with restore discs and I don't have an actual copy of windows (only ever had OEM copy). Is there anything I can do, without having to go out and buy a copy of XP?
Thanks in advance

so you had an OEM copy of windows??
just install the hard drive, run the windows CD during boot and format the old windows partition, then install windows on the old windows partition space and it should be fine
but wait for someone else to tell their tales incase im wrong
just install the old hdd, and switch it on.
If you are really really lucky, it will boot up just fine, install its drivers and off you go.
If it doesn't... you have a few problems. You will need an oem cd rather than a restore cd, and to speak to someone in microsoft who is willing to reactivate your xp after you've told them your old motherboard broke and it was replaced with this one...

Thanks for the replies. I switched it on and the windows activation screen came up. It let me reactivate it without any questions other than why do you need to reactivate...I was honest and now up and running as if nothing had changed. The microsoft website actually seems to give conflicting info, which is why I recommend the advice from you guys. Just plug it all in and see what happens. Oh, I didn't even have an OEM disk either.
Thanks again.
Great service from Novatech yet again with regard to product and delivery service.
