View Full Version : Foxconn MB boots then powers off
Bought MB bundle and 450W PSU
Using nVidia Gforce2mx PCI graphics card
only PWRBTN connected
No HDD or CD
keyboard connected
System boots
one beep
can see boot screen and can DEL to CMOS
or F1 to POST screen
but after 15 seconds or so powers off
reset CMOS then sometimes gets a little further
Is it a problem with graphics card?
Any suggestions most appreciated by this newbie

try checking the temps through the bios hardware monitor.
temperatures might be getting a bit toasty
Thanx
System off for about an hour
reboot one beep
PCI devices shown
then reached nVidia Boot Agent before power off (Num Lock light still on)
took about 15 seconds
restart with power button
same sequence but a little quicker to power off.
How can I display the temperatures quickly?
why do you think they would get hot so fast?
PSU brand new - 20pin and 4 pin connectors plugged in okay, have checked 12V these show 12.15V

can you give as much info on your system as possible.
exact specs if you can
and pc components can get extremely hot ,very very quickly
I just got a Mobo bundle from Novatech (assembled by Novatech)
mobo NF3250K8AA-ERS
AMD3400 CPU
one stick 512Mb RAM
also Novatech 450W PSU
installed mobo and added nVidia gForce PCI card from old PC as this mobo does not have on-board graphics. First boot was with HDD connected. Windows booted okay but the power off happened during splash screen.
The "shutdown" problem occured each time I booted even with HDD removed.
I removed mobo from case (to avoid shorting) and tried again with no items added exceptkeyboard, power switch and graphics card. Made no difference as reported.
Did CMOS reset using jumper. No difference.
If graphics card removed get a long beep (no surprise there)
So, tried again this morning.
Hit DEL to CMOS setup. PC Health showed CPU temperature ramping up to 100+ before power off.
Clearly that is the problem as you suspected
I have read advice to try a different graphics card, do you agree?
Do you think there could be a problem with the Novatech build? I have added very little in order to test the system.
Thanx for your help
have chatted with Novatech help (Gavin) and he suggests re-seating the heat sink and will send thermal paste.
I will let you know whether that sorts the problem
thermal paste arrived today. Applied with care then booted okay. DEL to show PC health and watched CPU temperature climb to 106C before shutting down.
End of story. RMA required

it went that high
there must be something wrong there.
did you rub off all the original thermal paste from cpu and heatsink
does the heatsink have a fan, make sure its plugged in and running
Paste applied as instructed. Fan installed and running, blowing in the right direction. Only Power switch, keyboard and graphics installed. Mobo lying on insulating layer so no possible short circuit.
Power on, DEL pressed and right arrow Enter for PC health. Themperature started at 20C and rose to about 30 in 15 seconds then accelerated up to 100+. I do no want to keep repeating this as one time it will wreck the CPU.
The outside surface of the Heatsink did get warm but not hot. (Gavin had asked me to check this).
I will try the PSU on my old board when I reinstall that today. I cannot try my old PSU with the new board as it does not have the 4pin CPU supply.
I have asked for an RMA# now
Thanx for your comments, much appreciated
Have re-installed old board with new PSU. All booted okay. So looks like problem with CPU/Heatsink rather than PSU. Also checked the 2 x 12V PSU supply, these were both 12.15V
final report
Kit was sent back to Novatech and a tech called me to tell me that "the mobo was faulty". I will get my money back.
These things happen.
The fact that Novatech provide the support and handle returns with speed and courtesy is to be commended.
Novatech will get my business next time.
