Just wondering, it seems that there is a few photographers here all at different levels and skills...

How about some form of photography competition? Each week we pick a theme or a word and who ever takes the best picture by the end of the week wins or if Novatech are willing to offer a small prize nothing big a mousemat or somthing just for a bit of fun...:rolleye:

Novatech Staff/Forum Mods/ Forum Users (Non who entered into the comp) could judge, could throw together some rules if anyone is interested ?

Just a thought

The Rules:

1) Everyone create a Flickr account, its free and you get 100MB of upload space a month! http://www.flickr.com/
2) Once you have create your account, join the "Novatech Photography Competition group" http://www.flickr.com/groups/novatech-forum_/

1 - a theme is chosen

2 - any registered Novatech forum user can enter a maximum of three photos taken after the theme is chosen (and so the entrant must ensure that the date on the camera is correct and that exif data is present and correct)

3 - Add your photo to the group, then get the image URL and post it in the Novatech Photography Forum Competition.

4- after the closing date for entries there will be a period of time for voting - Voting will be done Via a Poll.

votes will be in the following format: each person has three votes and points awarded in the following manner.
# choice number 1 gets 3 points
# choice number 2 gets 2 points
# choice number 3 gets 1 point

Dio took your rules gave them an edit, as we can use flickr...

I can add any Forum Mods to the group and they can become forum mods aswell to the flickr paige

How is that looking so far then?

Good idea. How about fortnightly? that way it gives enough time to get some really good interest.

I'm more than willing to help with organisation and judging.

I'm sure no one would cheat, however I think that we should have the origionals PM'd to whoever is decided so that it can be checked. I entered a competition once where the winner was found later to have google'd the image.

Also a rule to add, the picture has to have been taken in that time period. Makes it a little more even.

Could We have some official response from Novatech Admins/Mods if they are willing to give some small prizes out?

And for them to pick the 1st theme.

Some queries: how can voting be done by a poll? If the poll is on Novatech, s it possible for the poll to have more than 10 options?

Further, having a flickr account will remove anonymity, if that is an issue.

I am sure a forum mod can extend the poll options, i am just waiting of an official word from Novatech?

Why does it need to be done via flickr? Is that necessary? I can't see what benefit that provides. I'm not on flickr and not everyone will be which might mean we get less entries. But I think it will be a good idea. I have been harping on about doing one for ages but haven't posted here of late. If you want info as to prizes then you need to get in touch with Amy or Gibbo or someone.

I have asked about the poll limitations before and got told that nothing could be done about that. i..e the limit is stuck at 10 max.

We can see information about the photo, what camera, time, exposure legnth etc...

We can also link flickr images to the forum, and provides great storage for members to brose previous comps and look at users profile.

Depends where you upload it to as to whether exif data is stripped. Why don't you just specify a condition that the image must remain online and viewable for atleast 1 month and contain exif data?

If anyone wants to play but doesn't have a digital SLR, might be willing to part with my 350D + 18-55 Kit lens for somewhere around the £200 mark....

Obviously includes, battery, charger plus a little carry case and UV filter for lens.

Yup I have the G1 =]
Really good camera tbh, though i've not explored a lot with it.

I really want something like a 200+ lense and some macros for it.
**** the micro 4/3rds lenses xD

Idea for a theme: Peoples rigs. Basically a photography cometition idea where people get to show off there rigs.

I think submissions being anonymous would be good as it would leave bias out of it.

Perhaps a bit too specific and would require specialist equipment (i.e. a macro lens). But something like "computers" or "the digital age" or something or nothing whatever shutup would allow a bit more artistic licence. Then people could take a photo of their rig if they wanted.

May be a bit similar to the show you setup off thread. Here http://forum.novatech.co.uk/showthread.php?p=206539#post206539

I'm with Kevin on this one...something to get people out and about and really thinking would be good.

Also, there's been a lot of talk, and people interested, but nothing actually commissioned by a mod or admin apart from Dowdell. What's going on here with the go-ahead?? Would be nice to know rather than be ignored.

I am still very interested, but like you said there has been no response from anyone at Novatech :(

I would like to get this show on the road, but just need some confirmation.

Why not just start the first one off as a rehersal with no prize? Get us all used to the format. No need to wait around for novatech really. Winner gets to think up the next theme.

I was gonna say exactly that.

Some theme ideas:

1) Outside Looking In / Inside Looking Out (This was a theme for the A level guys at college and produced some interesting results
2) The first approach of winter
3) Digital Life
4) Perception
5) Water
6) Weather

Dio

I'd go with any of these.

Matt Harris
23-11-2009, 09:39 AM
I'd go with any of these - something which has a wide appeal to get as many as possible shooting, inside or outside.
I would also suggest the following guidelines which are from another site whose competitions I follow closely:

• Only the following adjustments are allowed: Cropping and straightening, and colour, sharpness, contrast and brightness adjustments that affect the entire picture in the same manner. With the exception of the above, no other Photoshopping or editing is permitted. No selective editing, such as air-brushing, selective colourisation, clone-stamping, layer masking, composites of multiple photos etc.

(From: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1311832&p=1)

Thats all well and good, but the thread you linked to is all about technique, not just taking a good photo.
Which makes the rules understandable, as its easier to see if someones got the technique down with a pretty much out of camera shot.

Also. That pretty much rules me out by default, as I only use layer masks for adjustments. Then again I am a perfectionist and a wee bit obsessive.

bezza
23-11-2009, 12:09 PM
But a photography competition should be about taking photos. A photoshop competition is about editing. So I think those rules are fair. Not everyone has the latest version of photoshop either so keeps it open to more people.
