Im looking to upgrade my CPU.

Currently have a Pentium 4 550 (P) HT 3.4 GHz and was looking at a Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2 x 2.4Ghz 4Mb Cache 1066 FSB Dual Core Processor (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?IL-E6600)

The current spec of my pc below:

Base processor
Pentium 4 550 (P) HT 3.4 GHz:
800 MHz Front side bus
Socket LGA775

Chipset
Intel 915P

Motherboard
Manufacturer: Asus
Motherboard Name: PTGD1-LA
HP motherboard name: Puffer-UL8E

Full Pc spec HERE (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00268903&lc=en&cc=us&product=436204&dlc=en)

Im running 1gb of ram at the moment, but will be upgrading to 2gb with the processor.

Would this processor be compatable with my current spec or is there anything ill need to change ?

Also,i read that the fan that comes supplied with this processor isnt that good,is that true ? or would it be advisable to upgrade that as well ?

Sorry for all the newbie questions,i just need to be sure to be sure :)

motherboard and RAM
RAM needs to be DDR2, you have DDR1
stock hs/fan isnt that good, but the core2duo doesnt create that much heat, so in fact, it does work well
and a new psu

Thanks for the reply,i havn't forgotten about you lol.

Didnt really want to go down that road of replacing other components, just wanted a processor upgrade.

How about iff i revert the question a bit

What dual core processor could i install with my current spec without having to change other components ? and would it be any benifit over my current processor ?

Thanks again.

That motherboard will take up to a P4 3.6 - don't bother upgrading, you won't notice the difference.

It is not compatible with the conroe(core2duo) cpu's - you will have to buy a new motherboard for that. and if you're doing that, get new ddr2 memory, its nearly half the price of ddr at the moment, so 2gb ddr2 will cost you the same as 1gb ddr. It will also leave you an entire combo to flog on the bay - may get you back the cost of your new motherboard, if you lucky.

FYI core 2 duo is a big impreovement over P4 etc. kind of a wierd benchmark but on an athlon 3500+ i can run 7 bots on my core 2 duo i can do 14 (single core). the 3500+ will be almost identical to your P4.

Thanks for the reply guys

Yeah, think ill give it a miss then, just get myself 2gb of ram and be done with it.

Might upgrade to core2duo in a year or so time with a complete new set up.
