Do the "dots" stop moving?

During this boot up time Windows is loading drivers and necessary system files. Make sure all your device drivers are up to date. Also try a defrag of your Hard drive.

One program to try is Bootvis (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Bootvis&btnG=Google+Search&meta=). This used to be available from Microsoft but they don't seem to offer it any more.

Hi Ben

Thanks for info, the answer to your question regarding the dots stopping on the bottom bar is know, but they do go rather slow.

I purchased the MSI 939 MB from Novatech last weak so I assume the drivers on the CD are the latest ones, and yes I will defrag as suggest, would any one else out there like to add to bens comments regarding my start up problem so that I could investigate further.

you got any USB devices attatched, try disconnecting them
any CD's in the drive, get rid of them
have you configured the drives properly, master/slave etc

I take it when you say you are using NST on the C: Drive you mean NTFS?

Has this problem started since you installed Windows or has it slowed down since?

Here (http://msicomputer.co.uk/Products.aspx?product_id=703620&cat_id=77) is a link to you Mother board on the MSI site. Most of the drivers are about a year old apart from the audio drivers.

Hi Ben - all

Yes I have configuered the Sata drive for the primary C boot up drive and the ide drive as a secondary could it be that these drives are conflicting,

yes Ben this is my first installation of XP on this new build thats why it puzeles me a bit as when it eventually goes into windowes it seems fine.

Hi all

I have found the problem with the slow boot up time into windowes, if I discount the EDI drive the windowes boot up is now fast with very little delay but if I plug in the IDE drive it all slowes down again. could this be the fault of the mother board chip set

I have my boot up drive on my sata C drive so I assume there is some kind of conflict going on .

The bois set up is as followes first IDE then second IDE this is followed by the third fourth fifth and sixth sata.

so I assume there is a long delay while the system is looking for the windowes XP, now it begs the question how do I resolve this problem, allthough I have configured the sata as the primary boot C up drive I would welcome any suggestions that may solve this problem.

Glad you found the root of your problem. :)

Are you able to disable IDE in the Boot order?

If you normally only boot from the SATA drive, have this set as the only boot device. If you ever need to boot from CD or USB etc theres normally an "F" key you can press during POST, or change it in the BIOS if it needs to be more permanent.

Also check your BOOT.INI file. Make sure there aren't too many entries.

It maybe a tad advanced though. Screwing with this could cause you system not to boot at all..

could easily be a damaged IDE cable
