View Full Version : Vista making my laptop run very hot .....

I bought a Magnum (NNB-252H) laptop two years ago (2.0 GHz Pentium 755 M processor, 1 GB RAM), which came pre-loaded with XP Home.

Anyway, I thought I would try Vista using the trial versions available .....all loads fine, looks good, but the fan is on almost permanently fighting a losing battle to keep the machine cool. Eventually the laptop shuts down for self protection.

Everything was fine under XP, so I'm assuming that I have no faulty components - more likely that they can't handle the demands of Vista.

Any thoughts on hardware / software upgrades that might help ???

Cheers

vista uses a bit more power to operate than xp, just because of the higher demands.
make sure the fans are clean and clear of any obstructions.
close down any programs that you dont need, and turn on vista's laptop/portable option in the control panel>system>power option, just like in xp

Cheers for the reply - unfortunately I have already tried all of the above, and it still runs hot with almost a permament fan even on the basic desktop

Would additional RAM or a BIOS update do anything to help ?

A quick google search shows that many laptop users (various brands) are suffering like me - so maybe its just a Vista glitch ?

I imagine its more along the lines of your laptop manufacturer has not brought out tools to control fans etc that work properly under vista, you have all the power management configured properly in the BIOS and have got it enabled etc in vista? ACPI isn't it? or is it APIC, ignore the wrong one, it only messes with IRQ's.

My setup on boot doesn't allow me to change anything of substance in the BIOS ....I appear to have Insyde MobilePro - system bios R1.04.

As for Vista, I have messed with the various Power Options to no effect - I have seen other threads which suggest that maximum and minimum CPU %'s can be set - by I haven't found them (and I have looked lots !!)

go onto vista's search bit and type in
"power management "

how long does it take before it shuts down
check your laptops manufacturers website for power management downloads for your laptop, because you can tune down your cpu speed in vista.

Adding mkore RAM wouldnt sort out a heat problem

I can access the power management tools in Vista, but cannot do anything beyond choosing one of the preset power options e.g. balanced, performance etc. Have tried all of them and they make no difference.

Shut-down time depends on the use - simply surfing I will get a few hours, but watching a DVD all the way through is impossible ......

My laptop is from Novatech, but I believe it to be a Mitac. Their website only appears to allow me to download the driver CD that I already have (on which Vista won't allow the setup file to run !).

My thoughts with the RAM were that it might take some of the load away from the CPU ?????

I think XP might be getting another chance on my machine - luckily I am set up for dual boot
