I don't know why i'm even bothering but what the ****, if you can't be bothered to provide suitable information, then why should you expect any help.

What kind of content and traffic are you looking at? What kind of reliability do you need? What is your budget?

would recommend a cheap laptop for just a webserver, unless you allready know it's going to be getting a LOT of traffic...

how many hits a day are you expecting? how much/what type of content are you serving? (video, static HTML, ASP, PHP etc. can you get away with a LAMP server? (Linux, Apache, Mysql, Php)
if it's minimal traffic, then yeah, a £50 PIII from ebay will be fine.
if you're expecting EBAY levels of traffic, then there's no such thing as a cheap web server

PIII? PIV mate ;) it just so happens that i've got a best offer on GX260, so if it's accepted i'd be happy to pass it on to you for the same price (£30-£35) if you want it for a server?
Full spec:
P4 (northwood) 2.4Ghz
512mb RAM
40gb HDD
xp pro SP3 with COA
cd-rom
tell me if you're interested and i'll try extra hard to get it for you

Assuming (given the location of the thread) you are looking at new and without any requirements given, I'd say just get an entry level PC.

If you will be doing the sort of LAMP hosting (in my case about 1 million hits per year, plus running some on the fly stuff with ghostcript, etc.) mentioned earlier, as hinted at by others, I think you will find what you have is overkill for the job.

More interesting and something I might look at one day would be to see what you could do with a low power consumption build - anyone here looked at say a Via Epia?

yeah, funny you should ask that... might actually start a new thread somewhere...

I've heard of many epia web servers.
just look at the project list on mini-itx.com
half the projects on there are file/web servers
the other half are media centres...

You could just buy a host couldn't you? Just suggesting/ideas.
