If you loose your CD / DVD drive or drive in My Computer this link has a possible fix.

1. Click Start / Windows Button.

2. Type regedit, and then press enter.

3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
The screen should look something like this.

4. On the File menu, click Export.

5. In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.

6. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

7. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

8. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

(steps 6 and 7, normally you will only have an upper or a lower filters, its very rare you will have both)

This fix also works with XP.

***Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system.

Note If you had installed multiple CD-writing software products on your computer, you need to uninstall the software products before you remove the registry keys.***

reworded and easier to follow

To solve this Code 37, 39 or 41 error, follow these instructions:

NOTE: After removing these registry keys and rebooting, it may be necessary to reinstall any CD or DVD recording applications.

1) Close all open programs

2) Click on Start and type REGEDIT and press Enter

3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
* SYSTEM
* CurrentControlSet
* Control
* Class
* {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

* UpperFilters
* LowerFilters
* UpperFilters.bak
* LowerFilters.bak

5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor

7) Reboot your computer

8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

Normally the reason for the erroneous values for the upperfilters & lowerfilters registry keys being set is due to the installation or uninstallation of software - any software. It doesn't happen all the time and is a bit random, but it's relatively rare on a per user/machine basis, so I'm surprised that you've run into it again straight away.

First of all check that the DVD/CD drive is in device manager and that it has an error code on it. If it's not there at all then it may not be the same issue.
If it's there and has one of the above error codes then instead of looking for the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} key in regedit, try tapping F3 (find) and do a search for 'upperfilters' (without the quotes).
When you find one look at the top line and it check to make sure the device says CD/DVD instead of another type of device. If it doesn't then keeping tapping F3 until you do find it.
If you find that upperfilters is found for the CD/DVD then delete the upperfilters & lowerfilters keys once more and reboot.
