So guys & gals, what is a safe core temp to run a 720BE up to?
I've tried to unlock the 4th core on mine and it's not too stable.. so the overclocking begins......
I've just tested it using Primer95 for 1hr, and it ran lowest (before testing) at 16oC then whilst testing ran up to 37oC and then when finished settled back at 18 - 20oC.... so what is safe to run the core up to?
Currently running it safely at 15x 200Khz, so 3Ghz, but have run it up to 3.4, but trying to be a bit more scientific this time.....

we'd recommend nothing over a 50-55oC degree boundary to play it safe.

Max temp is 62C.
Load temps shouldn't exceed 60c.

running it safely at 15x 200Khz
Hope you're not running it at Kilo hertz :D (Yeah I know next comment said 3GHz and you obviously haven't underclocked it to just 3MHz by a factor of 1000)
Anyway, max temperatures to run with an OC everyday on a Phenom II is around 50~
However it has been well domcumented that the Phenom II architecture prefers cold to voltage so do not aim to be anywhere near 50 on load.

as mentioned above. AMD max is 62 degrees but its best to keep it under 55 degrees from experience ive found that the phenom 2's lose stability from around 56 degrees. what cooler are you using as that is some pretty low temps? if youre looking for just to bench you will likely hit around 3.8ghz but if youre looking for a simple bump in speed for 24/7 i would suggest 3.4ghz. many phenom 2 cpu's can hit 3.4 ghz with stock/ or around 1.35v this is also the point where larger amounts of volts are needed for small increments in speed gains thus the cpu loses power efficiency which will drian your electric more esp if youre looking for a 24/7 clock. so 3.4 is a good compromise.
hope this helps.

Hi death, thanks for the info, much appretiated. I have also found an excellent thread for a bit more research on oc'ing the Phenon II's Dolk's Guide to the Phenom II (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=596023) this guy has spent some time on this......
I'm on standard air cooling, so 3.2 - 3.4 is likely how far I will go, as I do want a 24/7 stable machine, but I'm going to practice a bit with this CPU and see how far I can get it to go on stock air and keeping the temps down.... however 24/7 is the aim.
Likely next year I'll drop a 965 into the box as the prices are tumbling nicely....... When I built the system I looked to update to a quad later...but not in a rush....
Cheers
