Is there anyone got tv on ubuntu via a usb stick?
If so, is there any "generic" drivers I can try as I'm using a cheapie no name windows dvbt stick.

I can scan for signals but not got any yet, obviously the stick is not recognised. I've been on linux tv but not found a driver that works with a usb stick.

From a terminal try:

lsusb

unplug it then plug it in and see what the end of

dmesg

has said.

as an example with something here (not doing dvb-t atm) I will see:

I've not heard to them either but the output looks to the inexpert me, hopeful. And you say you can scan it? Doy you have anything in /dev/dvb/?

I'm probably wrong but I'm wondering if your no channels bit might be a no signal/better arial need issue than a device driver one?

Just as a further comment which if say the device works on Win with same same antennae could be ignored. Where I live, I'm looking at a roof aerial, mast head amp, plus for the different rooms, a distribution amp. There is no way the little things that come with a USB stick or even the couple of indoor aerials I've tried will pick anything up.

Is your device one of these?
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/TVTunerCards/KWorld/KW-D-395U.html

The 9015 chip was unsupported for quite a long time but I think it should work OK now. Or it should pretty soon. Last time I researched it I bookmarked these:-
http://osdir.com/ml/linux-media/2009-07/msg00218.html
http://osdir.com/ml/linux-media/2009-07/msg00224.html

And this patch:-
http://linuxtv.org/hg/v4l-dvb/rev/624a78a1856158d3ce34c6a88d41083dab0a7130

Indicates that latest LinuxTV driver set should make it work - erm, probably!

In a nutshell, you need to choose your stick carefully. Many sticks are sold under a variety of brand names. Basically, you need to find out what chipset the device uses - as Jon says earlier. Then you need to find someone who actually uses one! This may take some fairly intensive Googling.

And a big +1 to Jon's comments about aerials. The poxy little excuse-for-an-aerial provided by most manufacturers will only work if your home is built directly beneath the transmitter mast - and even then it may not work in all rooms! :rolleye:

Another little tip. Don't mess about with MythTV. OK it's nice to look at but its a bloomin' hassle to set up. Get Kaffeine instead. If you are a Debian/Ubuntu user then:-

sudo apt-get install kaffeine

Providing your DVB device is recognised by Linux, then Kaffeine works out of the box, really well. And the EPG works properly for most devices too.

Best wishes, G

Ah I do mess about with mythtv. "tv" below has a twin Novat-T 500 in and and HVR 1110 (both Hauppage) the two desktop ones, "worthy" and "pip" also have a tuner in to enable stand alone viewing without interfering with (I don't think even 3 recordings at the same time crop up ofen...) the main server box.

mythtv is a good way for the 3 of us with different tastes, viewing habits, sometimes wathing the same program in the living room at night but just 2 of us, another watching if at all in the day time. Plus you can share CDs etc. with it.

It may not be perfect but has a lot going for it, and is better for us than the previous hw stand alone Goodmans twin freeview hw job.

Attempt at (deserved) good word for it over with, yes for a stand alone thing I'd be with Mr Goose, and kafffiene to try.

You're right. However, I neglected to mention that I am a died-in-the-wool lazy git and for me, the easy way is the only way! And it is largely due to laziness that I have failed to get Myth running as perhaps I should?

Also my G/F & I have cheapie USB sticks for our lappies, + a cheapie Lifeview Duo card in our "media server" (all penguin-powered of course) and I didn't pay more than about twenty quid for any of them (because I'm also a cheapskate!) So sharing isn't a real issue for us.

We can lie in bed watching completely different stuff. And If we find anything interesting we want to show the other, then we email each other! :D

Now, how sad is that!

OK if you got channels then they probably work.

Unfortunately the KDE4 version of Kaffeine is currently far inferior to the KDE 3 version. In fact, KDE 4 is really still beta-test quality software, released far too early IMHO, even though it has a full version number. FWIW, she-that-must-be-obeyed refuses to use KDE4 at all until its fixed properly and is currently using KDE 3.5 on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on her favourite lappy.

Anyway, you may find that if you click another channel and wait, then you can in fact receive it. Also you can select by typing in the channel number with your keyboard and waiting a few seconds. That usually gets round the demultiplexer error - certainly on my KDE 4.3 boxes.

Edit. Another thought: you have an MPEG2 codec installed haven't you? A rule of thumb test, can you Play DVD's? (These also use MPEG2) If not then you might want to check out my little how-to...

Just to note, Ammock: I'm out of my depth now. I know the basics like the IDing bits above, trying to see if there are error messages but then it is run for help... and for our tv, I use pci cards I know work...

Not much but hope it does work for you.

Another late night then Jon? lol :)

I have a sneaky feeling that Kaffeine has actually found the stations OK, eventually. I'm out of my depth too. But from my (albeit limited) experience, Kaffeine 4 generally throws that error for one of two reasons.

a) A bug in Kaffeine 4 which sometimes refuses to let you watch a channel for no obvious reason. Click another channel, wait a few seconds then go back to the first and the problem goes away. Actually there is a knack to it - my new media server does that sometimes and it is very annoying. Sadly it's just one of thousands of bugs that remain with KDE 4.3 - made all the more annoying because the older KDE 3.5 works perfectly in this context.

b) Codec not actually installed.

Best wishes, G.

I was out of my depth before I started lol. But you all have been helpful.
I've now done this,

sudo apt-get install libxine1-ffmpeg libavcodec-unstripped-52

which has fixed some issues, but not the ones i want, :).
Problem seems to be a kaffiene bug that is not yet fixed.

But your support is welcome, i'll post back when i get it working, kaffiene still seems the best bet, it has found the channels after all.

Trouble with Christmas is it gets in the way of the important stuff! lol :)

My guess (and it is just a guess) that once you have the MPEG stuff sorted then Kaffeine will spring into life.

FYI, DVB-T uses MPEG2 for TV and MP2 (not MP3) for radio. Also, I noticed that you are using Ubuntu 9.04. Perhaps time to upgrade to 9.10? Quite a few multimedia issues were fixed in the upgrade, especally with KDE apps such as Kaffeine.

Good luck and please keep us posted regarding your progress.

Right Mr Goose, just finished your very helpful "how to play Dvds". Didnt quite work, possibly problem between chair and keyboard.

However, I'm now watching Blondie Live By Request. whoo hoo !!!
Whatever floats your candle I say.

I got the dvd's to work by adding this line to terminal

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

and it all works! For other newbies, I did all of Mr Goose's stuff first.

DVB-T latest
I have also found some evidence that VLC player and Kaffeine don't get on, even after VLC is removed. This may have some bearing on my case as I it installed before Kaffeine, beggar.
More later, hope y'all had a good Christmas.

Glad you are making progress. And ther'es nothing wrong with Blondie! Debbie Harry was absolutely stunning IMHO! :-)

But I find the libdvdcss thing strange. You see, libdvdcss2 is one of the libraries that my guide provides (it's in the list next to w32codecs or w64codecs). The reason for getting it (and all the other stuff) from the Medibuntu repositories is that Medibuntu tends to have the very latest Ubuntu compatible multimedia stuff.

sudo apt-get install skype googleearth googleearth-data ffmpeg mplayer mencoder libdv-bin libggi-target-emu libggi-target-monotext libggimisc2 w64codecs libdvdcss2 mplayer-doc non-free-codecs msttcorefonts ttf-xfree86-nonfree evinceAlso, if libdvdcss is all you needed, this implies that the ffmpeg stuff was already loaded and working.

WRT VLC & Kaffeine conflicting. The only possible conflict is the Mozilla multimedia plugins. Basically you can only use ONE of the Mozilla multimedia plugins . But this is not the issue here because the plugins are separate programs from the desktop apps.

The desktop VLC and the Desktop Kaffeine do not conflict as far as I am aware. In fact, I have 8 GNU/Linux boxes, running various Ubuntu flavours, all running both Kaffeine and VLC. My Peak USB DVB-T sticks work on them all. Three of these machines are desktops (well server towers actually). I have tried my Lifevew DVB-T Duo in these three boxes and it works perfectly on all three. Whilst I fully admit I may be overlooking something, I really don't think that Kaffeine conflicting with VLC is the issue for you.

Anyway, I'm glad you are making progress. It might be worth contacting the V4L devs and asking for their comments. In fact Id be very interested to hear what they have to say.

Best wishes, G.

Thanks Mr Goose, your very patient.

i have been doing this in a hurry unfortunately, the missus frowns upon holiday computing, so I've been squidging in a few mins here and there between the triffids and Christmas pudding.

I might have done something wrong or out of sequence.
I got an error of
Package skype is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package skype has no installation candidate

However, I now have a code book, where I copy every line of code I put into terminal, hopefully helping me to learn. I've got other errors with kaffeine but it is all good fun.

Least when I get it to work I'll think I've done something and I will have learned.:)

I'll keep you posted on progress. Thanks again

Well,don't know where to start.

I had a message from Kaffeine saying it needed to uninstall my nvidia sound devices.
So i ok to that, cos i was using the ati ones anyway.
Kaffeine starts up and I got BBC4!!!!

However, if i click another channel it loses its demuliplexer again, lol.

Not been able to get it back again yet, but I'll keeping going till I get it.
however, I asked for help and i got it,cos technically I did have a working DVBT stick, if only till i changed channel, but it did work for a bit.

So methinks my query was answered, so thanks lads.

This tells me that you are almost there. Well done indeed.

First up WRT Medibuntu (or any batch CLI install). Simply take delete the apps that are missing from the install string and try again. Or use the "--ignore-missing" switch.

Now it seems to me that your card and the kernel module are working fine. I think you are hitting a Kaffeine bug. Have you tried changing channel typing in the channel numbers rather than using the mouse? I sometimes get the demultiplexer error with Kaffeine 4.x and I find that using the channel numbers rather than the mouse almost always eliminates the problem on my machines.

Give it a whirl and let us know how you get on.

Best wishes, G.

You psychic Mr.Goose?

I now have all the channels, all work, and no crashing with clicking either, although I've taken your advice and using the kb to switch, but I had to try clicking as well.

I'd love to tell you I sorted it myself, but as you said, it sprang to life.

Nearest I can give as an explanation is this.

I got the nvidia sound message again, this time I said permanently ignore.
Unfortunately I was playing audio cd with rythmbox when I launched Kaffeine.
so Kaffeine said, as the hd ati was in use, it would use the nvidia.
so I got Kaffeine and the tv chnnels and no sound.

SO, with lots of unplugging device, rebooting and presumably only using the ati sound, Kaffeine works a treat now.

More importantly, I have now transfered everything I do, except Games for Windows, onto the ubuntu box. I have an old Vaio and some desktops that I am now going to install buntu on, as this has given me confidence.

I'd just like to thank you and Jonbanjo for the patience, help and guidance.

As they say in Stoke, "SORTED!!!". :)

We say the same in Southampton - but only very occasionally. lol!

Seriously, well done mate! I think that Kaffeine is still a bit flaky. IMHO KDE 4.3 should really be called KDE4 beta. Hopefully by the time the LTS (K)Ubuntu is released in April, KDE 4.4 will be out and Kaffeine's glitches should be a thing of the past.

Just as an aside, you know that you can record both TV and Radio to your hard drive from Kaffeine don't you? The .m2t files are in fact mpeg2's. Radio shows are mp2 and you will need to use soundkonverter or ffmpeg to convert them to mp3. Also you can record more than one channel simultaneously, providing it is in the same multiplex.

If something else hogs the sound. Quit the other app. Quit Kaffeine. Then start Kaffeine again. You should not need to reboot. Sometimes you may need to do a killall kaffeine in a terminal, just to make sure it is flushed, especially if Kaffeine has bombed.

That's it. I'll leave you to enjoy a bit of telly! Best wishes, G.
