Long story short, I did a restore to factory settings using the hidden partition on my X55 MV Pro.

Now my Windows activation doesn't work, I've only got a few days left to sort this out.

I've called Microsoft nine times now, through four different numbers, the most recent taking me to America, so my phone bill's skyrocketed.

Which after 45 minutes on the phone to the states, they put me through to the people who could help me because they realised they couldn't, which took me back to the first number I called. Not helping at all.

I tried live chat, they told me to call Microsoft.

i am not sure why you have been calling america. when i was speaking with you on live chat i said when you choose phone activation and select uk it will give you a freephone number for the microsoft automated activation system. if it does not activate when you call that number and enter the product id it will transfer you to someone in the microsoftactivation team and they will look into the problem for you.

Indeed, I have found this process very painless.

I was put through from a UK number to the US and then put back to the UK.

The english person I spoke to before he put me forward to America said

"Don't take this personally, but all our customers seem to want to talk a lot, and as much as I love to listen, I can't spend too much time on a call."

I was on the phone to him personally for less than five minutes!

Well Mr. Lime, aren't you the lucky one.

I couldn't activate my windows 7 over the net when I reinstalled it, used the phone based activation system and it worked fine.

It seems very touch and go, with vista and xp it was indeed painless.

Did they offer free ring dings?

That would cheer me up yeah :D

For now I've used the cmd: rearm to get myself another 30 days of trial period,
so I'm not panicking as much anymore.

I can only get the 'Show me other ways to activate' link to show when I'm offline, and then clicking it does nothing!!!

Might be a stab in the dark, which may make you feel better but you could try resetting it again and reactivating.

Yeah I'll try that!! Gotta borrow an external hard drive off a friend though so will take a few days.

On the base of your laptop you will find the Vista product key. You can use any Vista media with that serial to reinstall with. You may find this a better option should you have some media floating around or borrowable.
