Try phoning up MS to activate, sometimes it has trouble doing it online

More likely you are using a Vista code on Windows 7. There was an upgrade scheme for recently sold Vista laptops, but I'd think you need a disk supplied by MS with a fresh COA number.

Had the same problem.
I assume it's a bug in Windows 7.
Microsoft provide an online registration facility. It's fiddly to use but does the job.

One of the work ones would not auto-activate. I had to phone and pop the numbers in. Tedious but relatively painless.
Sometimes the automatic activation goes wrong. As others have said all you need to do is choose to phone Microsoft. You will have to go through the automatic phone system. If this fails (and don't be too surprised if it does) you will be put through to a human being who will activate windows for you.
