Should be fine. VIA sound shouldn't cause problems on a Foxconn M61PMV:

Pros: This is an excellent budget motherboard. The time from power on to the booting of the hard drive is extremely fast. I can push the power button and have Ubuntu 9.04 completely loaded in 30 seconds with an Athlon X2 5200+.

The onboard video card also works well. I was able to install Ubuntu from a live CD in 1080p.

VIA 1708B is the sound chip. I have a VIA 1708S myself, and the whole thing works fine in Ubuntu on my Intel 41G board.

I haven't tested with my current graphic card, which is new enough to have issues with hardware acceleration on Ubuntu's suggested graphics driver. But I believe ATI are up to date on their Linux drivers for the HD 5xxx series.

In other words, if you use a graphic card more than 6 months old, Ubuntu will support it out of the box. Any newer and you may need to hack around a bit. Nvidia 6100 chipset is well supported.

It's usually wireless that gives issues in Linux. Check for compatibility if you buy a card. That and Canon printers being a bit hopeless. :D

ty very much
i plan to use the pc as a sort of media center type thing so printers wont be much of a problem =] but i might add a 9400gt or a 9500gt later (i have found drivers for the 9 series on the nvidia website)

thank you for all your help
