Hi all,

I did do a quick browse through the forums before i posted this, but if the answer is here forgive me please.

My problem is that my Laptop, A Samsung r60, doesn't recognise it's built in DVD/RW. i've even tried using the Samsung Recovery and reformatted the whole Laptop (it needed a clean out anyway). i've viewed the device manager and it doesn't show any sort of optical drive on the system, i've browsed the samsung website, but couldn't find replacement drivers, any help would be great.

Thanks, Liam From portsmouth.

Does it show up in the bios?

I would hazard a guess that the drive is faulty or not connected properly. It should show in device manager as you will not require any special drivers. Does the drive spin up with a disk in there? I suspect you will need to replace it, should you feel the need.

No, it doesn't show up in bios, and no it doesn't spin up when a disc is inserted, although the yellow disc read light lights up when the disk drive is opened and closed.

Laptops can lead a bumpy life, so it would be a good idea to follow Snakedocs advice and check for bad connections on the DVD drive and where it connects to the motherboard before consigning it to the bin.

Replacing the DVD drive in a laptop is normally quite easy. It might be cheaper however to use something like this (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/OpticalDrives/ExternalDVDWriters/Samsung/S224QEUBN.html) or this (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/OpticalDrives/ExternalDVDWriters/Samsung/SE-S084CTSLS.html).

Steven, I don't think you read the whole thread (something we're all guilty of sometimes). If it doesn't show up in the bios, its definitely not going to show up in Windows!

that said, a DVD drive isn't essential, and i can work around it, just wondered if anyone may or may not have any quick fixes, thanks for all your help so far.
